5 things about Sheffield Wednesday 22:27 - Aug 5 with 1255 viewsSouthamptonfan

1) It was like a breath of fresh air being out of the PL. No airport style rows of stewards searching us all 6 times and checking our bags. Not a Japanese, Malaysian tourist with cameras in sight or coaches from Cornwall. The smell of gravy, chips and football chatter in a housing estate was like going back in time.

2) Not having a scoreboard for us to see was like not having your phone and being back in the dark ages.

3) They ran out of burgers and beer 🍻 before half time 😭.

4) I've not seen a set of away fans so enthusiastic and excited for a long long time. Fans were falling all over the floor around me when we scored.

5) Parked in the Greyhound races car park as it was only a 5 minute walk from the ground. It took an hour for the traffic to die down. Chatted to many friendly Sheff Wed fans - no arrogance, like the glory hunting prats in the PL. Just decent fans who love football and their local club. Didn't get back to the early hours.

It was a big pitch, which helped us in terms of the way we play.

They’re good fans, Wednesday. Saw a few outside the ground after the game who were generously praising us.

They were a very decent bunch of fans. Lots of praise about the numbers we took on a Friday night for a game on TV. But that's what "proper" fans, thick and thin are like. They appreciate what supporting your local club means. Breath of fresh air from the PL.

Sheffield Weds fan were mostly very friendly, around 30 of us popped into the New Barrack Tavern (20 min walk back into Sheffield) after game no problems, loads came over to us to compliment Saints performance and praise our fans, and pub landlady put this on Facebook afterwards

Thank you to Southampton away day drinkers in New Barrack Tavern last night

The optimism from Saints fans was great to see, especially after last season, and it’s so nice to go to cities, pubs and grounds I’ve not been to for a while, was getting a little bored going to same old places, often with little hope of even getting a point.

Regards 3) I’ve heard this was due to some of our younger fans playing up so they closed everything, same happened at Brighton end of last season, hope the idiots cut this out.

HA ha.

Walking back to the bus there were 3 or 4 blokes sitting on a wall singing "You're fcuking shit" at the passing Saints fans.

The thing was, these weren't mushes, but old men.

It did make us smile.

People forget that the 75 year old man was once a 19 year old Skinhead back in the 1960's when football violence became pandemic

Life has gone full circle for some of these old boys.

They may have reverted back to their old skinhead/bonehead haircuts.

Unfortunately today they don't have any choice in the matter. !!
