Closed in the late 1980's and a new one has been mooted ever since, but have we now got out of the habit of going skating, would a new one after almost 40 years without be a success

We caught the no.14 bus, stopped in Archers Rd & we walked up through the cut way alongside the school. You can still see it today but it’s all overgrown, I wonder if the council are aware?
Those plastic boots that you rented, so uncomfortable & a struggle to walk in. A school friend was on the local kids programme ‘Hey, Looks That’s Me’ & with the pay he bought a pair of hockey boots, we were so jealous Another mate went on to play for Southampton Vikings Juniors, now that was good entertainment watching them nutters!
We stumbled holding on with one hand to the wooden rail along the side of the rink that had massive puddles, before finding a big gap to set off into the mass that was skating round in a circle.
You felt pretty cool if you made it into the middle where the competent skaters spay stopped & chatted. Hits of the day being belted out & the cafe upstairs that overlooked the rink, a Sunday afternoon well spent.

Met my cousin for a catch-up last night and mentioned this thread.
He reminded me that our Mums had been skating the week before it got the living shit bombed out of it in 1940.
He recalled that after 2 G and T's that story put them there the day before the bombing and after 2 more G and T's she claimed they were doing their nifty manoeuvres on the ice when the bomb actually hit.
Clear evidence of the direct correlation between alcohol and bullshit.

I think I only went in The ice rink 2/3 times but The Top Rank nightclub opposite was a frequent haunt of mine. Great happy memories.
Yes, Thursday and Saturday nights at the Rank in the Tamla & Motown area. I remember seeing Ben E King there, singing Stand By Me and Spanish Haarlem..
I wasn't much good at ice skating, but I saw Southampton Vikings play (they weren't much good at ice hockey).
This one used to fill the dance floor at the Rank:
'Breaking Down The Walls of Heartache' by the Bandwagon sold very well in the UK but hardly got a sniff in the USA. The group also released 'Blame It On The Pony Express' which also did well in the UK. I vaguely remember that Stevie Wonder was one of the first acts (possibly the opening act) at the Top Rank. Personally didnt enjoy Saturday nights at the Rank. Much preferred it when the upstairs bit of the building opened as 'The Metro' (either on a Tuesday or Thursday) starting at 1000pm and finishing at 0200am. Music was much more to my taste as someone who had cut his teeth on Soul music at the Adam & Eve club.

I was there when Ben E King played there. His support act was Chris Shakespear Globeshow. Chris was a Winchester lad & the rest of the band were local. They had a top twenty single with a cover version of " Ooh Blah Dee, Ohh Blah Daa" Originally done by the Beatles. Marmalade also covered it.

Going back to the late 60's(where you normally find me) a great night out was a concert with Geno Washington and the Ram...Jam...Band..sort of tongue in cheek soul..loads of brass and percussion ..played the Guildhall and the old Concorde a few times.
