Saints V Arsenal The Report
Sunday, 27th Dec 2015 11:32

Perhaps the best and most satisfying victory at St Mary's since our return to the Premier League three years ago.

In the build up to the match I wrote on this site that the problem for Saints was that our senior players were not leading by example and that the likes of Jose Fonte and Victor Wanyama needed to stand up as leaders and lead by example.

That is exactly what they did as Saints cut out the errors and put in a magnificent performance that ranks as perhaps the best of the last three seasons since we returned to the Premier League.

Jose Fonte was a rock at the back and looked back to his old form, marking the occasion with a great headed goal, Wanyama was big, strong and motivated, something he has not looked in the past six weeks.

Ronald Koeman had also mentioned in his comments in the build up, that he was perhaps going to give a chance for those that were on the fringes and equally worthy of praise for this win were those who have not played as much this season.

Perhaps the changes were made because of injury, but Cuco Martina marked his return to the first team with a screamer of a goal that could well be goal of the season not just for Saints but indeed the entire Premier League.

Shane Long came in for Pelle and lead the line brilliantly, he caused Arsenal problems all night and fully deserved his two goals and it could have been three more with a little luck, he showed why he has been a vital member of Ronald Koeman's squad since his arrival, although some have been slow to recognise this.

But if the foundations were laid by these four, everyone else who go onto the pitch for Saints on the night chipped in.

Maarten Stekelenburg has attract criticism of late, but he was cool and composed and when Arsenal had perhaps their best chance when the ball rolled across the goal, not many perhaps realised that the Dutch keeper had made a brave block save to keep it out.

But there were also great cameo roles, Jordie Clasie ran and chased and perhaps his misfortune on 67 minutes to have to come off injured was the teams fortune in that Oriol Romeu came on at 2-0 and with fresh legs helped break up the game with Arsenal looking for the goal that would get them back into the game.

Put literally this was a team performance showing that all teams have bad runs, but good teams will come back and get the breaks that turn bad runs around, as a squad we had both the quality and the depth to move up the table again with the confidence back.

This game perhaps emphasised that sometimes squad with depth will win points where last season our squad with much less depth might not have won, that has always been something that some of our supporters have overlooked.

This was not an easy game by any means, Arsenal had 65% possession, we had to dig in and run our socks off to make sure that they could do little with it.

Arsene Wenger has wonderful eyesight when it suits him, he whinged that the first three of Saints goals should not have stood, that JWP was offisde (marginal and the benefit was rightly given it was that close) for the opener, that Long fouled ( marginal contact) for the second and that it was a goal kick ( proved it was a corner by TV replays) for the third.

So Saints have that vital win to break the slump and they can now head to West Ham on Monday evening with confidence knowing that the zest is back in our game.

I repeat, I got this game entirely wrong. I could not understand the team selection, I know injuries forced RKs hand.
But WOW! what a great team performance and I will be the first to say that Clasie appeared out of the shadows to tame Ozil ably assisted by the dominant VW. Every member of the team played their part, even the subs. but mention must be made of that screamer, bender, unstoppable first goal by Martina. Incidentally he put in a good performance as a defender too.
Shane Long had so much energy and ran rings around Arsenals slow defence.
It's not the time to even hint at a negative comment, nor do I have one, so come on you Saints., That's the way to do it! Now destroy those Hammers.

The depth of the squad helped us win this one, quite a few players who have been the subject of a bit of stick on message boards stepped up to the plate tonight

A performance I did not see coming and the whole team worked hard. We going to have to repeat that though to reverse the recent weeks. Just as one defeat does not make us a poor team, one good performance does not suddenly make everything alright, and we have to be careful that some players did not raise this game just because it was Arsenal. We have seen it before where we have played well against a top team only to then fade away.

But, superb last night and workmanlike and more clinical than I have seen in a long time. Continue that tomorrow night.

A great win and some excellent individual performances, as Nick points out. I thought that we would cause Arsenal's midfield problems if we were physically strong, and VW, Clasie, and Romeu all played very well in that regard. The game also shows that Koeman should rotate the attack more. I'm a big fan of Pelle, but against 2 big defenders he often gets marked out the game, gets frustrated and becomes useless. Long worked well last night because he knew he could beat the Arsenal defence for pace. I'd like to see Koeman choose to rotate the attack rather than being forced to do it, as last night.
Having said that, I don't think this performance and result answers all the criticisms that fans (and Koeman) have levelled at the team. Our defending at times in the first half was poor, especially from corners. Also, Arsenal were awful and pretty much didn't turn up in the second half. It's a brilliant result yes, but I hope fans and the board see this as a possible turning point and not a sign that our 'blip' is over. The important thing is how we react against West Ham and so on.

Both teams left the pitch having been reminded that football is a simple game that can become overcomplicated. Last week Spurs taught us this lesson and this week we taught Arsenal. Saints played on the front foot all over the pitch, and took risks whether to clear the ball, make a run to receive a possible pass or get on to a possible through ball or cross. Hats off to Ronko for the tactics and for making it clear to his 'star players' that he intends to use his full squad. Hopefully, we can now play at full tilt for the rest of the season and finish with a decent position and maybe a cup final. In contrast, will Leicester's small squad go the way of Wigan Athletic when they were in a similar position not so many Christmases ago? Once JWP fixes his shooting as Davis has done we can add a point or two to our total as well ;-) but JWP was awesome box to box just the same. Well done lad, you did the academy proud.

I agree with DPeps that we musn't get over-excited on just one game but it was good to see Long play well + Victor, Clasie, Fonte etc. And I just can't bring myself to be at all negative after 4 - 0 against Arsenal!! Let's hope we keep it going for West Ham.

Missed my first home game of the season as attending my sons wedding in Australia. Got up and watched live on FOXTEL. Great performance all round and thoroughly deserved, feared the worst when Virgil's goal disallowed. Could not fathom how Long got booked and koschelney didn't however all came good in the end.

A magical evening at St Mary's and a performance by players who I would suggest had been given a "shape up or their are others who will replace you" talking too .Long overdue in my opinion.

The result was made even better by their idiot manager and his pathetic excuses for a team that simply did not fancy the physicals. Made a change from his more usual "I did not see it"after match moaning though.

Brilliant result!

Just 5 to 6 more wins required and I'd consider our season rescued ;) #COYR #COYS #WeMarchOn

Immense performance throughout....Management, every player, tea lady, whoever. The cynic in me wonders why VW turned up for this one, (we'll soon see) , but nothing could ruin a brilliant evening all round.

I have a couple of points. What started Shane Long on the road to his booking was a head-high Arsenal boot missed by both the referee and his linesman. Jonathan Moss is usually one of the more reliable and consistent referees but he didn't have his best game last night being unable to distinguish when Shane was backing in and when he was being fouled, which was most of the time.
My second point is that it concerns me that we have resorted to the long-ball tactic in all of our most recent games. Last night reminded me of our 6-1 demolition of Villa last season when both Long and Mane got beyond their defence but this will not work against more mobile defenders, as was shown against Spurs. Nevertheless, the whole team put in a huge effort and the result was completely justified, irrespective of what that serial excuser for failure, Wenger, says.

As unexpected as the Spanish Inquisition but much more welcome, so now we have to stand back and ask the question, why? Arsenal were undoubtedly not at their best, but as others have said, they had more of the possession and troubled our keeper more than a few times. Make no mistake, they could still have won this game. The fact that they did not, and were made to look poor, was due to a fine team performance from Saints, which I think worked for a number of reasons. First, with no Pele on the pitch there was no temptation to hoof it up the field. Long and Mane are simply not physically big enough to deal with this. As a result, attacking play took the form of long passes on the ground and running at the defence along the wings (mainly) and sometimes down the middle. Long is always a terrier and will run all day long for you but he was clearly given licence to shoot on site this time and the percentage game says if you do that often enough, one of them may go in. Second, the swirling wind also deterred high ball tactics and encouraged the players to run with the ball at their feet. Again, Long and Mane but also the much underrated Davis and even JWP realised this. Third, at long last the plea from so many of us long-suffering fans was answered and we attacked quickly and attacked in numbers. None of this would be worth a jot of course if the defence had failed to hold up, so the final point is that the back three/four/five (I'm not sure exactly what formation we were playing actually) stood their ground and more than anything else, just did the simple things well. A fine, outstanding performance all round therefore, with special mention for a calm and measured performance from the midfield, especially Wanyama who seems to have recovered his mojo (pro tem). So, once more unto the breach dear friends. The Hammers will most definitely not buckle easily and will come at us with pace and aggression. The key to that game lies in the midfield so VW needs to keep up the good work.

A Christmas miracle!! Although, as soon as the pundits said "Arsenal can go top of the table if they win this." I new we had a chance.

I'd like to thank the tea lady for slipping the Viagra into the team pre-match meal. Instead of playing defence and playing for a draw, they went after them! As many of us have been saying on this site, the "big" teams are weak and don't like pressure. There was a fighting team spirit that has been missing the last couple of months. Hopefully this is the dawn of a new attitude.

VW was back to his old self and showed Arsenal-who are traditionally weak down the middle-why they will have to pay through Wenger's nose for him.

Great job by Long, although the usually coin toss when he gets in front of goal-but the more chances the more goals........

Very, very happy for Fonte, you could see by his reaction, how must this team means to him. Yes, he has had a bit of a rough time, but it wouldn't have been as bad if some of the others had done their job in front of him.

Lovely corner from Bertrand, perfectly placed with power, let him take them all from now on.

interesting how injuries to key players forced the managers hand to make changes and give players a chance to show what they can do thats got to rank as Shane longs best performance for any team I agree Fonte and Wanyama stepped up and much needed performance from them can't fault anyone great response string a few wins and we will be back up there !!
