| Britain to become the pariah of Europe, not just the EU on 17:11 - Dec 10 by franniesTache | From what i read that figure was one that excluded Covid related downturns. There's a few around that point at anywhere between a 3.3%-6% drop in GDP from a no deal excluding Covid (future prediction not current spend). Like i said though i don't know how the figures are reached as i'm not an economist and don't work in government. |
To be honest, a gentle decline in GDP is not going to be directly noticed. The resultant unemployment etc would be noticed but it will be difficult to pin it on Brexit (especially if there are still immigrants working in the UK to take the blame). The real cost of a no deal Brexit will be measured by the length of motorway queues in Kent and in the sudden realisation that the imposition of tarifs on imported goods will increase the price of more than just olives and prosecco.

There is some kind of strange poetic symmetry in a terrible decision being driven through by a terrible Prime Minister.

Also poetic justice in the person in no small part responsible for the decision, having to now own it in all its glory.

You're probably right that for most people the drop in GDP won't be noticed, the problem is what it means for the public purse, especially one that's recovering from Covid spending. I know the government have said they're committed to an end to austerity but i struggle to see where that money comes from if they're also aiming to cut taxes. [Post edited 10 Dec 2020 17:36]

Of course we must mention the British Empire. They bad , the EU is the solution to the worlds problems , harmony personified. Bigger is better and before you get on your high horse Ian I'm talking historically , for your assumption about the European Union being the equivalent of peace on earth in the future what facts do you possess ? The 1st Scottish referendum was before the Brexit vote but the fact it happened shows the world and even the UK is not a global kibbutz , people and nations have always been tribal. I predict the EU will fail , I'd rather not be in it when it does. |

Not your what you point with all those other references, but none of them seem remotely comparable to the post-war European integration project. That's my entire point, people and nations are usually tribal - which is why the European project, which is essentially one of cooperation, is such a wonderful thing. But if you view everything through the prism of conflict, you're not going to see that are you?

I think the Common Market was fine and the EU was fine in theory, even possibly wonderful, but politically there has been limited cooperation across all the member countries. I repeat, the UK views were frequently sidelined by the Central European bloc. The richer Northern European countries finance the poorer Southern European economies and in return get reluctant political support. Hardly wonderful and in my view bound to end in tears.

Our departure has no doubt strengthened it. They’re not exactly going to be queuing up to leave having seen the fun we’ve had. The way they are carrying on at present, there‘s more chance of The USA breaking up.

“I think most people are still in a state of partial or total disbelief when they hear about this.” Now, that people are beginning to understand the reality of Brexit, the vast majority of people in this country want to stay in the EU. But, it's too late. We've been duped by some very clever but very dishonest propaganda from Cummings and the Russians. Most people have been against Brexit since the middle of 2017. The way the polls are trending, by the end of the month, it's going to be about 50% in favour of remaining in the EU and just 35% in favour of Brexit. https://whatukthinks.org/eu/questions/if-there-was-a-referendum-on-britains-memb [Post edited 10 Dec 2020 20:22]

Do you believe in democracy and voting ? Get yourself a polish passport wife and visit the paratroopers in Arnhem , the menim gate is quite nice I hear. The beaches of Normandy are quite quaint ....... apparently come January the 1st we won't be able to unless we bow to Berlin and Paris ( oh I forgot Oslo ) . I literally ask why stay in this country if it is so doomed ?

Assuming your polls are conducted accurately with a 5%sample ( no chance) they are pointless, like asking views on the Saints after the Leicester game!

Don't talk about democracy please. Nigel Farage has been pretty quiet about his friend Donald when it comes to insisting on the sanctity of votes! To people like Trump, Farage, Cummings, democracy is just a game to be played. I see the UK heading down a crazy path that a majority never wanted - that's what democracy means to me.

So let's dissect your comment ..... Trump , Farage , Cummings ( you didn't mention Boris or any other Tories or for that matter Labour ) You think everyone who voted Brexit supports them so you think democracy is broke ? I think you may find a lot of people , including 5 million labour voters , might disagree.

Dirk You are at it again with your left wing political claptrap. I suggested a few weeks ago that you stick to football comments and leave politics to people who have more knowledge on that subject. You let yourself down by spouting rubbish. Please ....oh please ......discuss only football topics on which you usually have something sensible to say......but politics, you have no idea.

I visited Arnheim a couple of summers back, really enjoyed it. I've always been fond of the Dutch and their attitude to life. When I was young my mum and gran used to get invited over there for the battle commemorations. They were well treated by the locals due to my grandad's involvement. I think he was an engineer in the Hampshire regiment and flew in with the jeeps in a glider. Not many of them survived but he was injured and hospitalised there for six months, although I wonder if he wasn't captured by the Germans until the area was liberated. He was a professional soldier, signed up for 15 years from about 1932. After the war he served in Palestine before coming back to Southampton. Tough as old boots.

Oslo. I assume Norwegian Airlines won't be wanting to operate their cheap flights out UK airports anymore then?

That story makes me think and a little bit angry, how can the 'europeans' stop us from going to visit after what we , as a nation , have done. As for Arnhem the flower children who still tend the graves of the paratroopers is more than quite touching. Dutch Kids in 1944 still tend the graves to this day. The EU must have a short memory if they think that denying us as a nation the right to visit the fallen is a product of Brexit then they are heartless . Perhaps the fact their cemeteries arè full of British soldiers whilst ours are full of British widows has alluded them.

They may of led some but I have not changed my view about Europe in 25 years. I am older than some of them or st least shared primary school with them, so in your view am I a right wing nutter ? Am I allowed to just dislike the setup ? Feel no solidarity with the French or Germans ? Get an uneasy feeling about their motives ? Watch Eurovision and watch them hate us ? ( lol ) If you want right wing just go back 80 years, don't tar the average Brit with that brush. And patriotic you are not , I get the distinct feeling you want us ( as a country ) to fail so you can say I told you do. It won't happen , I trust the British people a lot more than you do.
