I suspect my suggestions of all fans being searched on entry and being forced to hand in the following in exchange for a double shot of very strong alcohol:-
- mobile phones - flasks - packs of sandwiches
may not have gone down too well.
Looking forward to hearing the output from the meeting.
Maybe they will suggest music to celebrate the awarding of corners, free-kicks etc.
I would perhaps approve more of something to celebrate shithouse fouls, like Holgate's superb foul against West Brom.

The atmosphere is what is is because we have an unhealthy proportion of bellends in our support. The nippers coming through are proper clueless and think rocking up in a Stonie and regurgitating City/United or anti-Pompey songs is what it’s all about now. Also, we just don’t have the same passion or pride in our city that the Northerners have and we must have one of the highest proportion of well-to-do fans out of the entire 92.
If it doesn’t come naturally, I’m not really interested in any contrived pr bollox to try and improve things.
If you look closely at fans of say Leeds and Newcastle most of their fans seem working class, young to middle age men who are mainly beered up . In contrast many of our fans are middle aged middle to upper class types with many women these people don’t want to prance around a make a racket . I’ve been going since the 70’s and we live in a mainly well to do area. This is not going to change.
No meetings are going to change this fact.
Having said all that we do need all our singers in one place which is often the case for away games but certainly not at home hence we make more noise away . It’s not rocket science.

Not sure what part of the city you grew up to, but most of what I lived growing up wasn’t well to do in the slightest. The Southampton I grew up in was a pretty f*cking rough working class city.

I think that we could improve things by:
1. Having a home end. Sharing one end with the away fans is nonsense and the away fans should be along the sides. The argument is of course that tickets on the sides are more expensive and there are rules about how much an away fan can be charged, but we need our own end.
2. If you want passion on the terraces, give us passion on the pitch. I know the days of "ale house brawlers" are past and that the game has been sanitised but we could still play a brand of football that is exciting to watch. Do you want to see 800+ passes and 1-0 home win or 600 passes and perhaps a narrow 3-2 win or loss? I'm guessing many want the latter because it's exciting. RM doesn't know how to do that.
3. we need new songs. The one about Pompey is wrong in many ways, but it's just boring. We need to find a song and make it our own. Look at Stoke and Delilah.
4. Improve access to the ground. FFS put a train platform outside the ground and link it to Parkway and Central. For me the last 15 minutes is always spoilt by worrying about how long it will take me to drive out of the city.
Having more accommodating train times after the game would help Trains that leave at 1700 and 1715 are of help to noone at the game home or away fans Let’s have a few at 1730/45 and 1800

Just speaking generally mate we have many fans from a large catchment area places like Lymington and New Forest areas. Look around the terraces at ST Mary’s. Women, kids, old men, families etc.
Of course we have exceptions to the rule and many Working class fans and I enjoy away days because of the atmosphere generated, it’s definitely getting better I think. For me I’d rather listen to some Shyte songs sung by nippers than have total silence. I personally love a good sing song after a few bevvies. I’ve never understood those who sit there in silence , If I wanted that I’d visit a library.

You’ve nailed it. Nothing says “improved atmosphere” more than a better train timetable.

Trains out of Southampton are terrible for midweeek matches, should have trains until 12pm going to London, I want a few beers post match before getting train back to Basingstoke but it’s a brisk walk to the station and if I’ve got time grab a beer

The atmosphere at Pompey games is hideous. Yes they have long periods of continual noise, but it's repetitive ner ner ner ner ner bollox, with a fvcking bell being rung throughout. Why the fvck would we want to aspire to be like that?
Likewise the gimps at Palace; dressed in black with their megaphones and tifo's. No thanks. I'd take the moaning and groaning at an understated St Mary's over both those any day.
You have a point with the 'Palace Ultras'. I met one at a business meeting and you couldn't have got further removed from the old terrace 'culture'. This guy was a middle class, well educated Asian lad who said he wears black for matches. His enthusiasm for Palace was great, but I'd pity that lot if a mob of Millwall or say, Cardiff got in amongst them ever....

Didn't they organise their own police escort from their pub for a home game against Millwall?
Pretty much sums the fancy dress nerds up that

There seems to be a lot of generalisation here, that the 70's had a great atmosphere and that everyone was a working class, scarf wearing flag waving fanatic, that the 1980's was all the casual culture and all lads, and that from the 1990's everyone is middle class.
There is room for all at football and that has always been the case.
The Palace ultras might not be able to hold their own against Cardiff or Millwall, but that is not what they started up the group to do, it was to improve the atmosphere at Selhurst Park, not take a firm to Millwall.
Likewise after the 70's those "Terrace Culture" aficionados were not the most vocal of supporters at any club, the whole point was to be well dressed and stand around looking mean and moody, it was frowned upon to spend 90 minutes singing, hence the terrace culture types migrated from the Kop, the Stretford End, the North Bank and in our case the Milton Road to other areas of the ground.
The singing sections at football grounds these days are mainly those who like to make some noise but arent interested in fighting the opposition

They might not want to take on Millwall, but being dressed in black like some Italian ultra firm is certainly tribal and almost inviting a slap.
As for the 70's and 80's, the semi against Palace and the cup game at the Skates' hovel certainly had atmosphere and were low on families on a day out. I'm not saying that's right, just that generally it was more atmospheric.

Our more vocal fans moved from the Milton Road End to the Archers.
Way i remember it the Dell was always a bit all over the place, the milton was the main "singing end" but was mostly nippers, as you got older you tended to move out, either under the east/by the tap, or if you were a certain way inclined to the west stand.
Also remember the archers with the split stand, by the cage, being another type of fan.
Though the thing I personally miss the most isn't even the singing, it's that roar that used to follow the players round the ground.
I've got no idea why we don't have that at st mary's but you'd hear the whole ground roar the team forward, and you'd really know the ground was going when the old boys in the upper east and west would stamp their feet on the wooden floors.

When the 'old boys' stamped their feet in the upper West Stand you could get covered in sawdust,I know I was stood under it.

I genuinely feel for the nippers who never experienced football at the Dell, St Mary's is fine and we had to move, but it'll never have the soul that the Dell did, and the fact the Dell was more than a little "rustic" added to those charms

The atmosphere will improve once the vast majority of fans stop sitting there like zombies and start making some noise. It amazes me how many people seem to be so devoid of even a modicum of emotion at our home games. No amount of world class light shows, massive flags and tifo displays will cure that problem. Perhaps giving everyone a couple of free drinks pre-kick off might loosen them up a bit.
Maybe people need to feel that they are part of the whole thing, instead of cash opportunities? It has been thus for years, so don’t expect a few wins against ( compared to to the PL) moderate to poor sides, will suddenly excite and include. There was a brief period when RH joined that people began to feel there was really something there, but nah.

Talk about thinking outside the box, that's bordering on genius, maybe worth giving the Fan Advisory Board at SFC a bell, and maybe even the new Chapel End Kop boys.
Does getting up at 4 in the morning help the thought process?, l'm only up at that time now and again for a Jimmy, It's an age thing.
What about trains and buses maybe getting to SMS say 45 minutes earlier, would that help? Didn't get up till 8, so my best offer.
