Showed some fight . Stephens played well in fact they all did . Great save by Peretz at the end to give us the win . Roll on Fratton . UTFS.

Saints played 4 4 2, a goal kick went up the field instead of to a defender, they stopped the tippy tappy ineffective passing , got the ball forward and just played the game, instead of sticking to a theory. Who would have thought that crosses in the box and forward passes enabled us to win a game 🫢

Yes, by playing forwards instead of sideways! We were only poor because we kept going sideways and backwards with a back 5. Tonight, all the goalkicks were up the field, and we won. If you attack the oppositions's goal you win! Long may it continue.

Sorry 1 team we looked fragile and started to come apart in the second half.
We need a team that can stay strong for 90 plus minutes, I didn’t see that tonight.
Pleased with the 3 points but far from convinced.

Solid gritty win...just what we needed.

1. Better with 4 at the back.
2. Wellington better defensively than no Mannings land
3. Ross Stewart a focal point, outlet. Made they're CBs panic.
4. The keeper saved us near the end from a Bamford shot that Bazunu wouldn't. He's looking better.
5. Stephens came in and looked good , played like a leader.
6. Downes and Jander put in a shift.

Result. A win.

I’m not sure if you are aiming that at me? But we were not great. Our shooting has gone backwards. Shef Utd were poor and offered nothing until Banford should have equalized.

But hopefully this will get us going again and at least give some confidence going into Sunday. Also good to see Stewart back, he must start on Sunday if fit.

You saw a different game to me Grumps. I agree with the manager for once.

'Pure desire to win' - Eckert
Southampton boss Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:
"After a long spell (of not winning) the first win is always the hardest.
"We had to dig very deep and in the end it was just pure desire to win that game of football.
"It comes from so deep inside to grind out games and credit to the boys because they put so much into every minute of the game.
"Today we were much more direct and we got the ball forward a bit quicker, Ross Stewart was very good up front for the 60 minutes he gave us today."

But for some poor finishing it could easily have been four.
We looked far more comfortable with four at the back but still looked a bit fragile as they pushed on. Hopefully this win increases confidence for Sunday and onwards šŸ¤ž

It wasn't completely convincing but we did ground out a result and it was a more entertaining game. Sheffield united should have got an equaliser at the end, but it was a fresher performance, more energy, and much better than we have had recently but not outstanding or anything like that.

Not going to get carried away as we always seem to do well against Sheffield United for some reason.

But we look much better with Ross Stewart in the side.

Brilliant save from Peretz at the end from Bamford; shite defending led to the chance, mind. Would have been doom and gloom on here if that had gone in.

And now the world looks a better place.

Much better. Sky commentators so bad, the bloke saying throughout match we were playing a back 3 with fellows and wellington wing backs, he basically looked at the team sheet and decided that was how we were playing instead of using his eyes to see it was a back 4.

It was much better, mainly because:

- We played like we meant it for once and showed some character
- We had a centre forward

But, as a long suffering Saints fan I have to wonder:

- How much can we rely on Ross? We looked good early in the season when he got fit (remember the away fixture v Sheff U?). It was his injury that led to the severe decline in form. Now he can only play for 60 mins, will that be enough? We still desperately need to sign a centre forward.

- How many games will the players bring full commitment to? It should be like that every game but we've seen before that this lot can be part timers when it comes to mentality.

As others have said, it wasn't perfect and we were a bit flaky, but it was definitely a step forward and encouraging for Sunday. Let's hope for the best.

It was much better, mainly because:

-The opposition was so woeful.

It was a much improved performance last night and we should of won by a much larger margin, but ,for a decent save from Peretz in the last minute we could well of limped away with only a draw.

The Blades were probably the worst team to rock up at SMS this season. I know they had suspensions and injuries, but then most of the sides we've played recently could say the same.
We really should of buried this lot.

Having written a depressing piece at the beginning of this week, I feel I should rebalance things slightly by saying, I only saw some of the game and missed chunks of it. But, I welcome the win and a win is a win especially when you have had a period of struggling to get any form. It was less than convincing and the opposition appeared to be very poor (which surprised me as I thought Sheff U were on an upturn) but there did appear to be a bit more fight and purpose. It would be nice to think that this may help in the weekend ahead and beyond but time will tell. I am not holding my breath too much.

An important result and 3 points though and at the moment I will take that.

A much better performance and a deserved win against one of the division’s form sides.

The 4-4-2 / 4-4-1-1 formation worked really well and we weren't getting over run in midfield like in previous weeks. The fact that we dropped Wood meant that there was no hesitant sideways passing or passing back to the keeper. Welington showed defensively and going forward why he has to start over Manning.

I thought everyone had a good game probably with the exception of Azaz who should have scored two or three goals.

For me the stand out player was probably THB but the case could be argued for Jander, Fellows, Scienza, Stewart or Jelert who all had good games.

It was great to see Jelert and Fellows combining on the right and Welington and Scienza on the left. It was good to see Stewart making space and holding the ball up.

Even Downes had a good game. My only criticism of Downes is when he receives a pass he immediately knocks it back to the player who’s passed it to him without looking up. Often he’s in masses of space and could just turn and move forward but he doesn’t look up. If you look at the players who continue to play in this negative way it’s mainly Wood, Downes and Manning who have had this style of football ingrained on their brains by Martin at Saints and Swansea. Personally when Charles is fit I’d replace Downes with him.

Put a run together now and anything is possible but we do need a striker in this window

I've always felt Downes is a system player, particularly Martins style of football where keeping possession and ball recycling seems very important.
The last time we were in the championship he was key to playing this way, when he got injured against Huddersfield we were all over the place and had much less control in the midfield for the rest of that game and for the next few before he was back in the team

He played exactly the same way for Swansea, I remember his performance when we played them in the FA Cup a few years ago, the game when Valery got sent off early and we won it in extra time

One thing that I noticed from the highlights was the way he won the ball back and created a chance that Azaz should have buried and put us 2-0 up

Fail we may, sail we must
