*In The Heat Of The Night* should have been on my list, Two awesome actors going head to head, great scenery and great music too.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Really difficult, and my list would change by the day,
but today.....

Master and Commander
This Happy Breed
Gladiator

The Castle just missed out. It should be best 3 films by genre.

Great to be reminded of so many great films..African Queen, Laurie of Arabia, The Man Who Would Be King, etc.

I’m sad to say I’ve never got round to seeing ‘This happy breed’. If it’s anywhere near as good as another of my top 10 films ‘In which we serve’ (another Noël Coward/David Lean film) then I’ve definitely missed out. British WW2 films are a favourite of mine ‘Went the day well’ is another cracker and who doesn’t love ‘Colonel Blimp’?

I once bought my wife 'the David Lean collection' for me...
Probably my favourite director, although I'm no film buff

A thumbs-up for ‘This Happy Breed’ from me, too. Seems to be on quite a lot on some of these nostalgic Freeview channels. The house that features in the film is in Alderbrook Road, Clapham. My snapshot ‘top three’ is …

1. All The President’s Men
2. Get Carter
3. Kind Hearts & Coronets

It may well be different tomorrow!

1: The Lord of the Rings (yes, this is 'cheating' but I honestly view that trilogy as one film)
2. Conan The Barbarian
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Last of the Mohicans misses out, but deserves an honourable mention.

Fair enough, I get it...

In that case, my top 3 films, according to number of times watched, would be:

The Royal Tenebaums
Trading Places
Rocky

And actually, i'll stand by that list.

Great choices, but a bit light on subtitled films so:

1) The lives of others
2) Cyrano de Bergerac
3) Betty Blue

I can never do this without splitting up comedy and non-comedy, so ….

1. Life of Brian
2. Spinal Tap
3. The Big Lebowski

1. Godfather II
2. Raging Bull
3. The Usual Suspects.

ps. Question for the OP regarding The General. Is that the Martin Cahill story, with Brendan Gleason in the lead? Great choice!

My top 3 changes depending on mood, season and the knuckle duster of everyday Life at that moment.

My top dozen films remain a constant but are interchangeable with each other given the above parameters.

so for today;

'2001. A Space odyssey' 1968. (Stanley Kubrick)
'Bad lieutenant' 1992 (Abel Ferrara version)
'Blue Velvet' 1986 (David lynch)

1. Local Hero

2. The Outlaw Josey Wales

3. The Long Good Friday

The General is fantastic. Brendan Gleeson has made some exceptional films, Calvary hasn’t had a mention yet.

Don’t mention the Four Year Plan. I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.

It's a good point. If I had to pick a comedy-only three it'd be these.

1. The Man With Two Brains. This film has more jokes per minute than any other film (probably) and most of them land.

2. Stir Crazy. The best Wilder/Pryor film. Just absolutely superb and has a ton of heart.

3. Groundhog Day. Damn, I want to say Ghostbusters. But Groundhog Day is just so great.

EDIT: we're 2-1 up against Cov and I'm too nervous to think about the football until it's over.
