But (and I don't like this, it's just the way things are) I'm convinced by Hunterhoop's proposition that to make the finances work we need to sell £500k of player per year (IIRC) and I'd say that with Hayden in the squad, Edwards maybe able to play a more attacking role than pure defence, then I think one of Varane and Field are the guys we can most easily spare if we get decent money for either. (Selling both would leave us thin in that position I think)

Hayden’s performance on Saturday probably persuaded the club to let him out on loan. Hayden’s best game since his loan spell.
| Field to Norwich on 18:43 - Feb 2 with 3158 views | dmm | What I don't understand is why the deal with Norwich only includes an option to buy in the summer, rather than an obligation. Field and QPR are parting their ways now and neither is going to want to resume it should Norwich choose not to take up the option. | | | |

I was just saying it is strange that a player that has played 175 times for us and always given everything, and is one of our few tall versatile left footed players is being let go on loan during an injury crisis? That's all... [Post edited 2 Feb 19:32]

Yes this is bit odd. At least it (probably) shifts out a wage burden we don't want? Not thrilled about this as I like him as a player for a specific job and he's been a servant to us - great pro so far as I can tell - but it's what we have to do. Depending on the fee (if it gets to that), you could argue he's been a success of the system. Sign a good player with some issues (injuries in his case) at a reasonable age, rehabilitate and prove his worth, sell on at higher fee in prime years. [Post edited 2 Feb 19:36]

Shame but Sam needs to be playing football at this point in his career, hope for him that he gets to.

£6m of player sales a year to net out on what we have already spent an amortised. More if we want to continue to spend over the next couple of seasons. I think it’s a real shame to let Field go. Fantastic servant to the club. Kept the club afloat during that disastrous Beale-Critchley-Ainsworth season when every around him was sitting down lame. Burnley away winner kept us up. The season and a half before, he was a big part of that play off push and phenomenal calendar year we had under Warburton. Then he was at the heart of the Cifuentes side that miraculously stayed up. Important goals in the run in against WBA (2), Leeds and Plymouth. Started the last 10 games. Always available. Always worked hard. Never hid. Never stopped running. And some of the best performances over the prior 4 seasons were with him at the core of the side, somewhat undermining the idea we couldn’t play good football with him in the side. Warburton and Cifuentes managed it. Overall though, I just don’t like seeing characters like his leave the dressing room. Cook will almost certainly leave at the end of the season too. Losing both worries me. And assuming we will only get a couple of million for him, we’re still going to need to sell. Varane for 4-5m seems the obvious candidate. Perhaps we might get an offer for Madsen we can’t turn down. But if either went, with Hayden turning 32, I think, we’ll need to sign another two central midfielders. Good ones cost. No guarantees we sign well or that they don’t need a whole season to bed in. Keeping Field would have made that transition much easier. I think it’s the wrong decision strategically and culturally, and doesn’t solve the financial requirements. All that said, if it’s done, it’s done. Good luck to him. Should always get a good reception back at LR. Players’ Player of the Year, Fans’ Player of the Year (different seasons). A really good servant. But we move on. [Post edited 2 Feb 22:37]

| Field to Norwich on 21:30 - Feb 2 with 1744 views | daveB | I think if we sold him this window I'd get that, bring in some money for a player unlikely to be a starter anymore, offers on the table for him as well from Derby by the sound of it but to loan him out when really I doubt Norwich will buy him in the summer once they stay up seems a really strange move. For me you'd loan out Morgan this window, get him 10/15 games somewhere and keep Field as your back up to Hayden/Varane and cover at left back. I find it bizarre we've given him two contract extensions in the last year and he was surplus to requirements by August this season. Good Luck to him though, always gave his best for us, good solid player for us the last few years. | | | |

We can’t have unhappy players in the squad. I’m sure Sam is a great professional and won’t let it impact his efforts, but right thing for us to do to also keep him happy after years of great service. We might even have received a decent loam fee. few 100K perhaps?

| Field to Norwich on 21:46 - Feb 2 with 1530 views | baz_qpr | Its a loan isn't it? Field's problem is that for the first time since Beale he's had a new manager come in, in the summer rather than mid season and if there is one thing you can say about Sam Field is that he is a slow starter, usually poor in pre-season and early season then comes to the boil in late autumn usually when we are in the shit. He was absolutely rancid in this years pre-season and the first games where he started and you can see why a new manager would look at him and say not for me especially with 2 other options for the same spot. I am saying that as a big fan Add Rolls Royce Ronnie and that's 3 players who can play for the same spot. at 27 he needs to be playing so good luck to him, you know he will be great wherever he goes especially in a January window. | | | |
| Field to Norwich on 21:48 - Feb 2 with 1492 views | numptydumpty | Think Sam wanted to play otherwise this deal makes no sense. Could have also understood it, if we had set a obligation to buy at the end of the season but there is none. Am guessing would have been on reasonable wages but not horrendously high. Morgan they are clearly expecting to step up and play more - but again Sam's versatility will be missed also. A very decent servant to the club who perhaps deserved better. As a club we move on, but Sam will be missed. [Post edited 2 Feb 22:11]

| Field to Norwich on 21:48 - Feb 2 with 1486 views | queensparker | Field will always be a QPR favourite and alongside Chair probably kept us up from relegation for two seasons in a row between them - the right sort and ever present But I’m weirdly ok with this. He’s now fourth choice midfielder behind Madsen, Varane, Hayden. Morgan also waiting in the wings. Ronnie Edwards can step in in an emergency. I think Hayden is a better player at exactly what Sam Field does and it seems pointless having both in the squad And a lot of our recent better games have involved players receiving the ball and passing it forwards. For whatever reason Field has never managed to add this to his game. We’ve all moaned about how stodgy our midfield is for years and while Field is an excellent defender he’s not an excellent attacker He’s a top pro and needs to play and this feels like the right time to clap him off with nothing but our very best wishes [Post edited 2 Feb 22:12]

Sure. We'll find out in time. Either way, as you say, he's a good pro. I just can't imagine him disrupting the dressing room if he was told to wait until the summer.

Currently, Field is behind Hayden (which is why he came on for him against Coventry) as Varane is injured. Madsen always plays alongside one of them. Knowing our luck, Hayden will get injured on Friday and we won't have an experienced replacement. I can't find a club injury update since early Jan, so unless Varane is due back this/next week, this seems a bit of a gamble.

It does suggest Varane is fairly close to a return. Mixed feelings . Lots of clubs in the championship strengthened today with that carrot being dangled in front of them of play off contention . I didn’t expect us to do so but shipping out an experienced , versatile and fit player seems a little risky to me . Can’t see Norwich fans being too enthused though by his performance at Carrow Road. However, he’s not only down the pecking order but there has been a couple tiny whispers from inside the camp that he’s not been ‘himself’ and said one or 2 things that were a little ‘un-Sam Field-like’. Might be nonsense or out of context. But he’s certainly frustrated . the quotes on the Norwich web site suggest that’s the case and even his body language recently has looked a little down , which is understandable by the way. Even if Norwich don’t take up any option to buy, I can’t see him playing for us again which is a shame . I wish him well .

Most of us would’ve been happy with him in the squad but I can’t remember a clamour of people wanting him to play every week. Stéphan rates Varane and Hayden ahead of him plus we have Morgan and Edwards as cover. Field has clearly stated he wants to play as much as possible which we cannot offer so it seems respectful to a decent servant of the club to give him that opportunity at a team who are not our rivals this season. Would expect Norwich are paying his wages in full and hopefully we’ve got a loan fee as well. The deal makes sense to me.
