First monarch to reveal his tax details.
Gawd bless 'im.
As we sang in the pub this morning:

“Send 'im victorious,
One pint between four of us,
Long may he reign o'er us”.

There 1081 airports in the UK

There’s a big old world out there full of different set ups and systems that have been in operation for centuries and most quite different to the UK.

Give it a go

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Burnham’s won quite a few more elections than the King, including one last week.

But again, confusing the role of a ceremonial head of state with the PM.

People should educate themselves on how our political system works before making asinine comments.

No arguments from me there, Kensal. But, to paraphrase something else (it’s in some book or other they give you at the end of Desert Island Discs apparently), let those among you never to have made an asinine comment cast the first stone.

There would likely be a lot more savings to the economy if religions were not subsidised or given charitable status.
I object far more to that hotbed of bigotry and indoctrination.

I'm not sure you are correct on your point about savings. Mainstream religion carries out a huge number of social projects such as food banks, homeless shelters, older people support, mother and toddler groups, and more. I know of no calculations that show what the monetary value of all that would be but years ago there was a survey of social projects provided by the church alone in the UK that concluded national and local government would not e able to replace them if they all ceased.

I’m a fiercely proud Englishman and love this country, its culture and history…. but I’ve never been a royalist. Agree with the above post. The Royal Family is a massive scam. Everything they do is designed to preserve their wealth and status. They are our ‘Cosa Nostra’.

Great post . As an outsider looking in , I’ve always found the devotion to the Royal family a bit bizarre . Handing money hand over fist to people who wave for a living .
However if that’s what floats people’s boats crack on with it.

You're right, such calculations don't exist.
But social projects are not entirely the domain of religious groups e.g. Prince's Trust (now called the King's Trust), Royal Foundation, Homewards etc.
And it should be up to society and elected governments to tackle social issues, not give hundreds of millions in tax relief to organisations with dubious histories.

Nothing against Charles or the Royal Family generally, but the finances need looking at. Among the most obvious injustices are the profits made from the king's property management company, which has made more than £1bn for the third consecutive year thanks to the boom in offshore windfarms paid for through energy bills.

The so-called 'crown estate', the royals’ portfolio of land and property, reported £1.2bn in profit for the last financial year, almost three times the amount it made three years ago. Two-thirds came from the offshore wind industry. Wind developers paid £875m in option fees last year to secure areas of the seabed from the crown estate, which is considered the legal owner of the ocean floor around much of the country. And once new windfarms begin generating low-carbon electricity the developers will be required to pay the crown estate a portion of the revenue they collect from energy bills.

The crown estate also plans to increase the annual pay packet of its chief executive, Dan Labbad, by almost 20%, the fourth consecutive hike. Labbad will take home almost £2.33m for the last financial year, up from almost £1.95m the year before, and more than four times the £517,000 he received in 2019 when he stepped into the role.

Doesn't the profit from the Crown Estate go into the treasury? I'm not sure that the Royal Family has an influence.

This!

When the revolution comes, one of the first things on the agenda will be getting rid of the House of Lords. Selection by patronage in this day and age is utterly ridiculous.

Criticism of the HofL is understandable when it has been filled with failed politicians, cronies or unworthy family members. However it shouldn’t be scrapped. It would perform its actual function if it was filled with (hopefully apolitical) people on merit; those that have knowledge and experience of a whole range of subjects from agriculture to the steel industry, football to Town Planning etc.
The HofL just needs complete radical reform not scrapping otherwise who scrutinizes terrible legislation put forward by cretinous, ideologically driven politicians?

I started the OP as a bit of a pub joke, I don't really have anything against Charles or the monarchy in general.
I always wonder if a real crackpot won the general election would Charles turn them down when they went to the palace to ask to form a government.
They used to say the queen really wanted to turn down Harold Wilson but later I read that she loved him. He was after all, our best peacetime PM.

Well it's not like elected Govts don't have dubios histories is it? I'm not defending the wrong religious groups do, but the church provided social support to those in need long before Governments have and, indeed, laid the moral foundation on which Governments have built social policy.

I don't want to get into a debate about this, but long before doctrinal religion dramatically skewed the dynamic of early human groups they functioned perfectly well in an egalitarian fashion: sharing food, cooperative child-rearing, and defensive efforts against harsh environments.

Spirits and deities were viewed as part of nature, not as the masters. They were unpredictable or playful, rather than moral judges.
There was no priestly caste or centralised religious authority.
But as people grouped into bigger populations, and in the absence of police or legal systems, priests, chiefs and kings used "Big God" doctrinal religion to establish a ruling class, claim "authority to act" as being granted by the gods, and used the concept of "supernatural surveillance" (i.e. fear of divine wrath) to enforce their laws and their idea of morals.
In other words, religion was the beginning of inequality in society.

It's technically independent of both the monarch and the government, but due to a deal done with the government during the Cameron years, the monarch gets 12% of its profits which as I've said has gone up substantially during recent years due to offshore wind farms. This is in addition to the so-called sovereign grant, which has also gone up significantly (£132.1 million in 2025-6 from £86.3 million the previous year).

I appreciate that we can't go into this any further, which is a shame as I've enjoyed the debate.

I do get the point you are making, even though I feel you've painted early human societies in muted colours. There was much greater diversity than you describe.

Anyway thanks for the discussion, Simon.

But wasn't the 12% a reduction from 25% because of the wind farms and isn't the money for official duties, staff and upkeep of historic buildings?

The "deal" with Cameron was to put all the funding I one place i.e. the Crown Estate money rather than money from different pots.

And before anyone gets the wrong impression I am a long, long way from a royalist.

I reckon we are all getting outraged by the wrong thing.
There are much worse people/companies out there paying less tax.

I'm ambivalent about the Royals, but after living in Windsor I can see that they do have an impact on the local tourist economy at least, and the royal parks are great places to be in.

Whats the alternative, we have more politicians around?

I've tried to work it out, the Royal family cost me, personally between £1.30 or £7 per year.

I'd rather my money goes to them than someone like Farage

I too, prefer to have a Royal figurehead than an elected one such as Trump.
A president would cost the taxpayer a lot of money, but would generate next to nothing in tourism. And then there is an election process costs every 4 or 5 years.

What I would like to change is a slimmed down Royal family funded by the taxpayer and the rest of them can fund themselves.

It is all in the national anthem of the UK

God Save the King

Nothing about the people, democracy, freedom, justice etc

Why should the royals pay tax?

The people are beholden to them, they sing it themselves

I see where Ive not explained myself.

I don't have a problem with a second chamber in the parliamentary process; far from it. My beef is how current members of the HoL are chosen by patronage.

Hence, if we're going to reform it, then as we're presumably not going to have crony appointed Lords/Ladies as members of a second chamber, then by that measure it would need scrapping and replaced by a more representative model, clear role and function set out, and renaming the second chamber would be required/inevitable.

Love this answer...

If there is anything you don't like about the UK (Royal Family, Immigration, Tax) then use one of those airports!

Although I don't think they are all International so you may not get far

Constitutional monarchies are over-represented at the top of the 'freedom in the world' index. That should count for something.
Slim the monarchy down- absolutely. Replace? Not for me.
