Will there be any pubs left? 09:49 - Sep 23 with 1206 viewsSouthamptonfan

Another pub closing down in Eastleigh. We pay some of the highest taxes in the world on alcohol, and some of the highest taxes in general. Yet the pubs are all closing. Businesses just can't afford to continue anymore. So depressing. Perhaps Burnham is protecting the pubs in the north?

It is sad to see all these pubs closing, but the issue is people arent using them and havent been doing so for two decades now .

The last few years has seen beer prices rocket and that hasn't helped, but fact is go to a Southern city and they are far from full whilst in the North there is still a drinking culture centred around a local pub.

The big pub chains would prefer to sell off their properties that are big so they can be converted into flats etc.

The truth is drinking culture is changing, the traditional pub with its architecture is going and being replaced by small independent bars that are not tied to pub chains

But it's also energy costs, business costs, rents forcing pubs to charge more for alcohol than in supermarkets etc, so people don't go, it's too expensive. Having a drink in an English pub has always been a very English / British thing to do. England for many reasons isn't England any more and it's getting worse.

20 years ago, I went to Newcastle return for an advanced open return train ticket for £20. It's now about £200. For a family.of 4 that os £800. Totally unaffordable. Everything is far too expensive.

You’re right about the culture changing
Went to the gym on a Friday night after work and expected it to be empty, absolutely full of teens and 20 somethings. When I was their age I was straight in the boozer at that time on a Friday. A mate of mines kids aren’t that bothered about going to the pub and would rather save their money and socialise elsewhere

Quite lucky where I live, there’s a pub in the next village which is always busy and the landlord has made it the hub of the community. We also have a really nice country pub in the middle of nowhere, dunno how it stays open but it’s owned by Fullers and the locals support it well

The pubs in the Northern cities have to pay the same energy costs, business costs & rents etc, but they flourish because the "Local" is still in their culture.

In the South it has changed.

But in general the Local pubs are going and it is getting to be a more town centre based culture, there are less pubs outside of town centres both up north and down here and what pubs there are seem to be more family and food focused than they used to be.

However Southampton town centre now has more bars and pubs than it had 40 years ago.

If you walked from the corner of Carlton place on London road down the high street to Holy Rood in 1988 there would be just 3 bars, The Park Inn & Goblets by the Junction and the the Queens opposite Holy Rood.

Now there are over a dozen and that is after two closed in the past month, same story in Bedford Place/Carlton Place are and Oxford Street.

No, that is not right regarding just being the south. A lot of pubs are closing in the north too. It's everything to do with costs being too high.

Yes, it's basically impossible for pubs with the taxes, energy and staff costs. More will close. It's even worse for businesses that have to compete internationally because e.g. our industrial electricity prices are about double what businesses in the EU or US pay. You can't compete on that basis.

It's also true that youngsters don't go to the pub in the way that previous generations did, but you have to ask why is this happening? Inevitably the cost of a pint is a big factor. Older people carry on because it's what they've always done, but younger people look at it and think there are better ways of spending money.

Excatly, the cost of a pint is a massive factor. A lot of the youth are buying a cheap bottle of cider from a supermarket, which is half the price of one pint nowadays. Amd not just the youth, you can get much better value in a supermarket.

Not sure whats happening with working mens clubs either
I used to play football for a local one, attendances dwindled mainly due to the children who’d been taken there by the parents didn’t want to do the same thing as their parents as they got older even if it was much cheaper for a pint
For the one i was a member of the final nail was the smoking ban, most of the people i knew quickly got fed up with having to go outside to have a fag, they’d rather stay at home and invite their pals round instead
Got knocked down and 4 houses were built on the site
Shame really as when i joined it would be packed at the weekend but habits change

Yes they take more drugs, but why? Again it's the cost. Much more cocaine is produced globally now. In the UK the street price per gram has halved over the last decade, while the purity has doubled. That means you get 4 times the bang for your buck.

Meanwhile the cost of a pint has gone the other way, so it's inevitable that youngsters now spend more on drugs and less on pints. If the cost of a pint was now 25% of what it was a decade ago, while the price of drugs had gone up significantly, then this wouldn't have happened and young people would still be going to pubs.

There are some honourable exceptions to this rule, including on this message board.

I think that we all used pubs as youngsters before the days of social media and sites like Tinder, and pubs were where we would often (hope to) meet someone and use our charms to persuade them that they should spend more time with us.

Nowadays, there are more immediate (and less challenging) ways of doing this on phones.

The world has sadly changed.

I'm not so sure that's a factor for your regular local boozer. Maybe for the city centre, wine bars and nightclubs, but regular pub drinking has always been mostly about mates, work mates and families rather than pick up joints.

Bit of a sweeping statement that

From what ive seen if my friends kids, not a parent myself, is that they are a lot more sensible than we were
Some of the mad shit we used to do in the 90’s would probably shock them

Hang on, are you trying to say that taking cocaine is a cheaper habit than drinking? That's absolutely miles off the mark. Other drugs might be cheaper than drink but cocaine certainly isn't.

I'm very doubtful of the purity being double what it was a decade ago too. Loads of stuff going round in recent years is barely even cocaine, mainly legal highs/speed.

You must be buying from the wrong dealer. Yes, purity has doubled:

https://www.substancemisuseres

I didn't say it was cheaper habit than drinking. I said that it's about 4 times cheaper than it was 10 years ago, due to the combination of street price and purity, all of which is driven by bigger global supplies. As a result, consumption has gone up a lot. We know that for sure because there's an ongoing programme that tests sewage water for different drugs.

If the price of a pint had come down in the last decade in the same way that cocaine has, a pint would cost 87p today. If that had happened, then I suspect people of all ages would be drinking more pints.

When I started going the pub at 16/17, you agreed to meet your mates there and that was that. That was where you did your socialising or at least the starting point for the night. It’s very rare that you’d go to someone house or did an activity like the gym, play football, go to music etc without a pub being involved.

That’s just not the same now. They track each other on Snapchat, they go to the gym and then leave it at that, they drive to gigs FFS!

It’s all very different to how it was when I was younger, which on reflection wasn’t massively different to my dad’s generation, although didn’t realise it at the time.

I don't do it these days. There's stronger stuff out there but you generally have to pay for the privilege, it's not a £40 bag like it was in the noughties. Most of the stuff out there is pure shite though even if paying £80, I know as I used to test it.

I agree it's definitely more widespread than it used to be though, only have to look around our away ends. Huge issue in society.

I don't think there's a direct correlation to drink there though. Generally the people doing it will be those who also drink. It's just become more socially acceptable now and therefore more widespread.
