The word 'ham', usually used as a suffix, comes from the Old English term meaning a village, homestead, manor, or estate. It in turn comes from the more earlier Germanic, and therefore Anglo-Saxon, 'haimaz' which has the general meaning of a home or dwelling place.
So Fulham comes from the Old English "Fullanham" meaning the "homestead of Fulla," a likely Anglo-Saxon tribal leader or landowner. | | | |
