Gone to Leicester…..

I actually thought he might have been the keeper most suited to the Rustyball faffery of passing triangles in our own six-yard box.

Joined former Man City assistant manager Maresca as his number two. A positive move for Leicester.
Meanwhile we still have a near post blind spot and hit or miss roll outs.

We have a new young goalkeeper to develop. Get rid of the experienced bring in the new.

Or have his experience as assistant manager to rusty
You have to wonder wtf goes on at decision making level at our club
No wonder we are in a downward spiral

I have nothing whatsoever to base it on and it is nothing more than pure "gut-feeling", but this does not feel like a smart move for Saints. Losing Cabellero to a rival who will know very well our weaknesses in goal and who could have offered a steady hand and head to some of our youngsters does not sit comfortably. Just have to hope my "gut feeling" is completely misguided.

It feels like Leicester are getting all their ducks in a row ready for the new season.

Aye.

There are a number of bad eggs who I would keenly see leave.

But he seemed like one of the good guys.

Gut feeling or not, it sounds just right with those thoughts.
What is it with our club that does not want experience anywhere near it. Ok, he doesn't have the firsf team coaching experience but surely he'd be able to help our young keepers

I rather suspect that now we have a younger manager, he is going to be opposed to having players in the squad who are older than him, and who he fears may have an influential opposing voice to him.

Therefore anybody hoping we might sign Fonte while we have this manager in place (for whatever probably very short period of time) is dreaming.

Lets get some perspective here, Willy Cabbalero came in and filled in a gap at Saints, and he was undoubtably a character in the dressing room etc.

But firstly he will be 42 in September so probably not going to get a game in the first team here, indeed in the last 9 years since he joined Manchester City in 2013, he has played a total of just 34 League games, in a shorter period 13 in the last 6 seasons.

Ok so we want experience, but what experience does he have in the Championship ? Nothing he has spent the last 9 seasons as a benchwarmer in England, what experience does he have in coaching ?

Russell Martin though has extensive experience in the Championship, about 6 seasons worth as a player and also a couple of seasons as a manager, so what experience can Cabbalero give him regarding the championship.

Martin has a team of coaches around him with experience in this division plus the experience of Jason Wilcox to call on.

I would not think that Martin would see Cabbalero or for that matter Fonte as an issue for him, neither have any coaching experience, the fact of the matter is that if we signed anyone older than him (he is 37) then I suspect Fonte aside, most fans would be in uproar and asking blaming Sport Republic , few players do a job in the top two divisions in England past the age of 35

Martin certainly has a couple seasons as a championship manger, that can deliver mid table mediocrity.

We know Martin has experience at this level
We need ppl around him that have experience above that Willy does and that’s why Leicester wanted him
Another big error by our owners

Well he was here all last season and Bazunu was one of our most criticised players.
Let's not suddenly put a 42 year old keeper on a pedestal. He was popular but other than that, what did he contribute? Selles was popular.
He got an offer to coach, good for him, let him go.

But he does have goalkeeping experience. We have just brought another young keeper in and are you going to say that his experience between the sticks in some sort of coaching (poss playing at times) role would not be an asset?

I don't know who the current GK coach is (do we have one?) but as 22 has said, Leicester thought he was good enough for the Championship

Dean Thornton has come from Swansea to be the new goalkeeping coach, he has around 7 years experience in the EFL as a goalkeeping coach.

Most goalkeeper coaches dont actually have that much experience as players at a high level, Caballero does not have any coaching experience at all, its not just about firing a few shots at the keeper in training anymore it is all about a host of other things to work on including mental strength and positioning.

Leicester thinking he is good enough for the Championship is no guarantee as anything, it is a mate of his who has appointed him as his assistant, there is no evidence it is on his coaching ability, we thought Nathan Jones was good enough for the Premier League, I expect he will use this line when he goes for his nest interview

"Go on give us the job, Southampton thought I was good enough"
