I had four of them for my subbuteo until I accidentally crushed one.

Other than that I remember being at the Goldstone in the late 80;s and they had them. I remember Saints fans were watching the game from half way up which looked distinctly precarious but the cops couldn't get them down.

I remember going to Brighton away early 1980's when they played at the Goldstone ground. The floodlight pylons were huge. I'm sure we won 1-0 too (*brainfog alert).

I think most of the old stadiums had them. Just in London I can picture in my head the pylons at Stamford Bridge and Upton Park, but I don't think Highbury had any (at least on my visits).

Plough Lane and Selhurst Park had them too. I think Selhurst Park still has them.

I got a set for Christmas one year, used to go through batteries very quickly

Loftus Road still has pylons
I was always quite taken by the one behind the goal at Vetch Field….I really need to find some more constructive things to occupy my mind

Nottingham's the place for floodlight aficionados. From Hooters car park you can see the floodlights of Meadow Lane, the City Ground and Trent Bridge. Newcastle's pylons always seemed unfeasibly wide, Leeds United's unnecessarily tall. Pompey have put one of their old pylons in their car park, or maybe it moved of it's own accord so it didn't have to watch the games. Anyone remember the Blue Peter episode where one of them (may have been John Noakes) climbed up the QPR floodlights to replace a lamp?

Was it the 27th of December 1982 ?

I was there, terrible game which we won 0-1.

Danny Wallace the goal scorer with Shilts in goal for us.

Poll: Derby day Sunday. What’s will the result be ?

Yep, sounds about right.

My mum had seperated from my dad a several months earlier and she was seeing some flash tw@t who ran a pub in Swanwick and was living with him above the pub. I'd only just got back from 6-months at sea when he phoned and said did I want to go. Truth be known the ticket was originally earmarked for one of his mates who couldn't go last minute. I met him at the pub as he'd blagged a couple of tickets for the game from contacts at Saints. He had a flash Datsun 280ZX and thought he was the dogs' bollocks. I had to put up with the bullsh1tting tosspot all the way to Brighton & back.

I do recall the game being 1-0 which was a good result but as you say, an otherwise forgetful game.

So, grim journey there, grim journey back, pretty grim game - but good result.

You must have been a posh kid then - pylons ffs! We could only afford the grass, goalposts, and barriers around the pitch to keep the hooligans off!
But I also remember the Goldstone and seeing a few Saints lads on them in the corner

Spurs used to have them inside the ground so supporters used to climb up them during big games to get a better view. My ex was a Spurs ST holder and occasionally got the next seat for me when the guy was away. He was on holiday in 1984 when Spurs played Anderlecht in the 2nd Leg of the UEFA Cup Final. Never seen so many people up the pylons at one end of the ground as on that night.

Villa also had them - I remember being taken to Villa Park in the early 70’s to see Pele play for Santos in a mid-season evening friendly game. The game was played in the height of the energy crisis in 1972 and Villa were told to play the game at 2pm to avoid using the lights. Their commercial manager was having none of it so went out and purchased a diesel powered generator to run the lights off grid. Only trouble was, Villa’s monster lights needed more power than it could generate so the match was played with only 3 of the 4 lights working. At half time some clever s0d worked out they could change which 3 lights could be illuminated so they changed the configuration to benefit Villa again in the 2nd half. Santos were not happy and started to walk off in protest before the 2nd half KO’d. Took World Cup Ref Jack Taylor a good 5 mins of diplomacy to get Santos back on the pitch and the game back underway. And yes, there were people up the pylons that night for sure trying to get a better view of Pele - I think Villa were Div 3 at the time and the crowd was over 54,000 that night.

Not sure about whether this was the case in the 70's, but I'm sure that in the 80's and 90's Villa had the bulbs on their flood lights arranged to spell A on one and V on the other. Would have looked 'good' as you were walking to the ground for an evening game.

88-89 Season
We stayed at a mate's in Sheffield the night before - who was at Poly there.
Drove from there to Boro the next morning.
No clue where the ground was and it was rough as up fvck there.
Saw the floodlights and drove to them.
It was a floodlit railway sidings. Fvck !!
5 of us in a Talbot Horizon !! :-)
Stopped to ask a guy if he knew where the ground was.
He opened the back passenger door and squeezed in.
If youse give us a lift, I'll show ya !!
To be fair, he directed us, told us where to park and advised us not to talk on the way to the ground.
Stopped at a Chippy, got the guy from Sheffield Poly to order for all of us in his best northern accent.
1-0 down
3-1 up (R Wallace, Razor with a header and deflected free kick)
hung on to draw 3-3
Ayresome Park - with broken glass cemented into the top of the walls in the away end.

That’s a classic.

We used to have a red Talbot Horizon.

I’m amazed you got 5 lads in that.

You cannot reason a person out of something they were not reasoned into.
