You could say that applies to the whole of the lower half of last season's table, substituting the promoted sides for the relegated ones.

"Southampton registering a league-topping £25m surplus."

It was tough competing against the likes of Norwich and Watford but we've done it again. What an achievement!

Man City, Man United, Spurs and Leicester fans must be green with envy.

Don't fret lad and just remember, when one of those cartel clubs have a blip of a season, we will be there to 'mop up' one of those European spots......

Ready and waiting to mop up those European places......

Isn't that article and table complete bollocks though? For a start it says we've only spent £15M... that was the Armstrong fee alone, what about all the others.....

The Sky Sports Transfer Centre has a much better idea what the real fees are than we do. They have a lot of reporters with numerous contacts inside the game working on it.

We've spent big in the past and it was a disaster. We've only just recovered.
We spunked 20 million on Carillo and how did that turn out?

Not sure we’ve ever spent “big” in the past. Even if we did and it wasn’t spent wisely doesn’t mean we shouldn’t again. I keep writing it, but we have been in the richest league for a decade, we should have money to burn. We should be able to afford flops as our revenue and profit should be that of an established premier league club that can cope with failed signings; it’s just part of the game that some players don’t work out. Instead everyone still bangs on about Carillio etc. In the scheme of things every established premier league team has their Carillios but most just shrug their shoulders and buy a better replacement. Instead saints seem to have this mentality that we tried to play with the big boys once but never again.

Look at the absolute state of Arsenal's spending!

The Arsenal have a net spend of around £500 million (give or take a few million) over the last 5 years, progressing from being rubbish in 5th, to garbage 8th the last few seasons.

So spending a bundle offers no guarantees, but they should have just about enough to stay up this season.

Agreed it is easy to talk about net spending leagues etc, but the reality is it is about how you spend it, last season we had a net spend of £16 million after transfers out'

Aston Villa had a net spend of £92 million, Everton £86 million, yet they only finished 4 & 5 places above us meaning their prize money from the Premier League pot was between 9 & 11 million more than us.

So who would you say was the more successful club last season, given we reached an FA Cup semi final.

As HE61 says spending a bundle excites the fans but is it really good business, you have to look what you have to spend against what you can actually achieve.

Fans see £90 million spent and think the club has ambition, but what is that ambition, what is the point in spending that much, if you want to break into the top 6 on a regular basis you need to be spending £150 million every summer and spending it wisely

The dull thing is supporting a club whose only ambition is to finish 17th and ensure another year on the PL gravy train

Arsenal have spent poorly, but they still finished a fair few places higher than we did last season and the season before that. We would I think all be very happy with 8th place, so why highlight them as they’ve actually performed far better than us.

They've won 8 major trophies ( 2 PLs and 6 FACs) in the last 20 years and never finished lower than 8th. They've been in Europe every one of those years. I'd take that.

What set Arsenal back was the enormous cost of their new stadium (£500 million), which opened in 2006. Because of that they have struggled to compete with the likes of Man City and Chelsea in the transfer market to have a squad strong enough to stay top of the league. They even had to sell some of their best players (a bit like Saints) and couldn't offer top players the sort of wages that their rivals could. In the long-term, they will get back to the very top again but they'll need to replace Arteta first.

Comparing Arsenal and Saints is not really comparing eggs with eggs.

Arsenal finished in the Top 4 20 years on the spin, up until the last five years in which they had a net spend of around 500m and got worse each season. If we'd have spent that kind of dough we'd probably expect to finish around 6-8th, otherwise what's the point of spending that much. That's not Arsenal's expectation.

The last few games the likes of Cedric, Chambers and Holding have played.
These 3 are pony who they couldn't give away for free, and would struggle to get PL football elsewhere.

Arsenal are a big spending shambles, but may still have just enough to stay up.

"It's why more an more people are drifting away from paying to watch a game in person".

PL average attendances have risen pretty much every year (pre covid) from 34,599 in 2012 to 38,181 in 2019, Championship up about 3,00, L1 up about 1,500.

Don't seem to be drifting away at all

That’s not a fair comparison, since 2012 for sure instance Spurs have gone from an average of 35k to 58k due to new stadia.
The big6 might see increased attendances and prop stats like yours up, but attendances are not better across the board

It would be good if you could show which clubs outside of the big six have money to burn. Over the past 10 years a good few have been relegated then struggled back up, but not on the money they have "earned".

Looking at the 2011-12 table, I think only Everton outside of the big 6 have been in the premier league for this long. So I standby my comment that we of all clubs have squandered the opportunity of being in the league for so long, and really not having that much more infrastructure or new revenue streams than we did 10 years ago.

If your ambition is survival that will be the best you can ever achieve.
