I didn't even know they were playing last night until I saw the result, apparently they were pretty poor

We had qualified before the Malta and Macedonia games so Southgate experimented.

I'm not sure he learnt much except.

1. Our first 11 is very much the first 11 and we have little depth at international level.
2. Alexander-Arnold will never be a midfield player for England - too slow of thought
3. Playing Rashford against teams who sit deep (low block is I think the phrase) is pointless and robs him of his most useful gift - his pace.
4. We are a poorer team without Bellingham
5. The left back, Lewis, who played yesterday is a definite prospect at international level

There were some odd things going on yesterday (and v Malta). Playing against a team laying deep presents a problem to all teams. Spain seek a way past by passing and passing and ... France rely on pace. Brazil on individual talent pulling two markers to each forward.

Southgate seemed to ask Grealish to hug the touchline but for Saka to cut in from the right. What's the point of making the defenders go wide to mark wingers if one of them narrows the pitch again? What ask Grealish to stay wide when he can beat his man but has not got the pace to stay away?

It was also the case that the midfield of Foden, Rice, AA, Lewis most of the time, pressed hard up against a static defensive line but failed to find a through ball. You can blame a lack of runners or a lack of vision or - in my view - a lack of time/space because they were too advanced.

There were some decent forward runs from Watkins, Kane, Foden (who I thought was our best player) and Saka, but the longer ball needed to find them was not delivered more than perhaps 2 or 3 times all night. Again a good way to beat a low block and better of cross field, but not tried.

I think England are better against teams who think that they have a chance against us and are prepared to come onto us.

To finish, Maguire and crew were solid, Pickford saved a pen but could not save the follow up.

The ref had a mare (never a pen) and seemed to think he was at a netball match where contact was not allowed.

Usual collection of bad tats on show and the usual lack of anything interesting from the game summariser, Dion Dublin.

It was a bit like watching Saints has frequently been over the last year. England tried to play possession football without the players who can make a success of it. Result: they failed to create chances against a very ordinary opposition and made some stupid defensive mistakes.

With all the key players available England can play possession as they showed against Scotland. But when they're missing a few and have a few round pegs in square holes, they never sustain the passing and movement required. It all ends up being very slow and predictable.

When you're playing against a team who set up with a low block, you either need a bit of quality to break them down, or you use brute force and aerial bombardment. England think they have the required quality, but unless they're at the very top of their game, the truth is they don't.

things we lernt from yesterday,we will never win anything under southgate, maguire is utterly shocking, trent alexander must have a family member on the selection commitee to be considered an international midfielder, why was it needed to ask a young kid to make his debut out of position(still thought he was our best player, shows some of the others up) when there are other good up and coming left backs in the premier league and god forbid if england lose harry kane to injury because there isnt much else

England missed Bellingham last night and as have been said if Harry Kane gets injured we are short in that position
On the plus side
Thought Rico Lewis looked promising.
Phil Foden is brilliant.

Switched over at half time. It was that dull.

I really don't enjoy watching England play these days.

If it’s a draw after extra time does it go to penalties?

I didn't realise they were playing either. International football is so long winded that it's boring. I'm really only interested if England are in a semi final or final.of the European cup or world cup. It takes so long to get there with all the qualifiers. Then England never actually win anything. It's been the same since 66.
