You're getting old, Nick. I've seen all of them play, not long ago. All of them have played against Saints.
Nico O'Reilly came on as a sub against us at Wembley. He also started against us at St Mary's in that 0-0 draw,. Noni Madueke came on as a sub against as in the FA Cup quarter-final at St Mary's. Morgan Rogers has played for Villa against us a number of times, including their 3-0 win at St Mary's last year. Ezri Konsa also started for Villa in that game. Djed Spence played in the Spurs team that beat us 5-0 at St Mary's. Eliot Anderson has played against us 4 or 5 times for both Newcastle and Forest. But, to be fair, Jarell Quansah has only played against Saints once, and that was at Anfield. All of the others, you'd have seen at St Mary's.
I've also seen all of them play in England games at Wembley and even if you weren't there, you must have seen some of them on TV.
The funny thing is, some of the players you've listed , like O'Reilly and Spence, have very distinctive hairstyles so it's hard to miss them. [Post edited 23 Jun 23:35]

I thought that was a relatively new thing though, since the demise of the old programme centrefold team sheets. BUT, their names still appear on the big screens, as do those of the subs. The names and numbers on the shirts help too. And for those who are blind, they are also announced very loudly over the tannoy system.
You must have seen and heard the name Morgan Rogers more times than that of some of your relatives in the last few years!

Watching the opposition is one of the joys of football. If there are up and coming players or new signings in the opposition, I always like to have a look at them and see what they're about. Frankly, in some seasons of watching Saints, it's been much more entertaining to see the opposition than the dross we've put on the field. I think it says a lot about the malaise towards the game for many, i've really hugely fallen out of love with football at the highest level as it's just corrupt and money orientated, but i'll never lose the love of the city i'm from.
I know a while back here there was a thread about why people support saints and i was shocked how many on here don't come from Southampton, so i would expect for those people the football bit to be the most important bit.
For me it's the opposite way round, the city part is the most important part, the football follows it.
So as i've grown tired of the sport itself i've tended to focus just on saints, i also don't really get attached to players anymore, or pay too much attention to them, as i know they'll move on and we/the game is just a job for them.
As for England, meh' i got bored of international football years ago, i'd rather saints won a corner than england won the world cup to be honest, though i wouldn't mind a day off if they do win it |  | | |

It may be very loud from the tannoy (as Partridge said, it's a brand name) but along with anything else that comes out them it's utterly incomprehensible.
TBF, I have no interest in crap football (other than Saints) so don't have a clue who any of the opposition players are when we are in the Championship, or lower. | |

I used to work with a labourer who was from Bembridge and he and his family were Saints
As has already been mentioned, I have no real love football any more apart from Saints and a passing interest in how Woking and Hibernian are doing

Nah i take issue with my city being called a dump. Yeah it's rough round the edges but it's got tons going for it, and compared to the city i grew up in in the 80s it's improved hugely.
Also i don't see how you can travel the country and call southampton a dump, compared to places like Gillingham, Stoke, Northampton etc. Southampton isn't even close to being a dump.

For me part of being a football supporters is not just the team its the place itself, firstly Southampton and then the greater Southampton area, basically anything within 30 miles or so bar Portsmouth.
It is a funny thing with football supporters, Manchester United & Liverpool have many fans who love their respective clubs, but don't love the city that the club is in because they live many miles away.
Likewise those who don't support those two clubs will deride those who support them for not supporting their local clubs, but welcome those fans who for some reason support their clubs but live afar.

I guess it's just the nature of modern football though, to many folk football is a past time and a sport, it's there for entertainment.
For me it's local pride and my history, it's where i'm from, where generations of my family are from and live now, and i absolutely love the place (warts and all).
Same reason i support Hampshire in the cricket, or want to Southampton fighters doing well etc.

London is a great place in the centre plenty of history and iconic buildings, but the bulk of the areas in the city are far worse than any area in Southampton.
Im proud of our maritime past where we were the Gateway to the World with the great liners of the time.
Our City Centre which has so much parkland as well as just about the most complete city walls of any other place in the country.
Some of the great facilities in the City such as the Sports Centre, the Municipal Golf course, it's proximity to the New Forest.
It is a great area to live, but like the rest of the country has suffered 30 years of little investment or highlighting the great things about the place.
The council has failed us drastically, it can create cycle lanes that snarl up the traffic, but not turn our city centre into a pleasant way to spend a day.
A forward thinking council after building West Quay would have opened out the walk in front of the walls down to Mayflower Park and made it a great place to wander down, yet how many people both local, tourists or those spending a night before or after a cruise know what could be on offer, if the council got it's finger out. | |

Agree with all of that Nick, i also love the docks. The sight of the cranes swaying over the water, the noise of the containers, the fog horns going at midnight at NYE, the fact that it all feels alive. It's not just had a bunch of "luxury" flats dumped on it and been forgotten about, it's still a working port.
The common is also an amazing thing to have bang smack in the middle of the city, not many cities have such a large green space so central, and the greens and woods of it are playgrounds for generations of nippers growing up in the city (and a good place to sneak your first cider or spliff too).
Also for a city of it's size Southampton actually has a surprisingly decent musical heritage with places like Joiners, the Brook and 1885.
As you mentioned the walls are something we should really make more of, and the fact that within them you have places like the junction or dancing man is great.
The amount of history in the city is actually amazing if you pay attention, the problem is the council don't really talk up or show off about it - which lets be honest is a sotonian trait in general - and could make so much more of what we have.
Even just outside the city you have the itchen river walk up to winch, victoria country park, hamble with it's marina and pubs.
I can't disagree the center and various estates aren't the most unique/best but honestly as someone who's moved away and comes back regularly i think the center of the city is considerably better than it's been for a very long time.
The bit around guildhall square is great, and bedford place going pedestrianised really helped it have it's own character. I'm also a big fan of what they've done with Gods House Tower, which now has art and music events on and has been given the love it didn't get most of my life.
One thing i do find a bit disappointing when i go back is the food options, compared to other similar sized cities it doesn't have many really great restaurants. | | | |

I lived in Southampton for 3 years as a student, joyfully taking in the whole of the Branfoot era.
In truth I went to Southampton Uni partly as they did the course I wanted to do, and I also wanted to watch Saints, having not long before that started having done so.
I didn't think it was a great place at the time; the city centre was a bit grim and it struck me that if you weren't a student, it wouldn't be much fun to live there.
However, since then, I think the city has had a large re-generation.
When you consider West Quay, all the pubs around the city centre, the new grounds for the football and cricket teams (granted they both have less character than their pre-decessors), I think the city has a lot more going for it than it did in the early 1990's. |  |
