Gareth Bale
at 13:44 7 Jun 2022

Bale is far better than Walcott, there’s no question about that. Could you see Walcott hypothetically leading any nation to the World Cup over the last couple of years? I’m not sure he would even manage to lead a country that’s all but guaranteed qualification for every World Cup like Japan.

Just because Bale isn’t good enough to start in the best team in Europe doesn’t mean he isn’t for us. I think we’d actually be a really good fit for him as he’d be guaranteed minutes and I’m not sure money is the top priority as he wants minutes before the World Cup. Don’t think he’d get those minutes if he went to Spurs and surely he’d want a premier league club rather than Cardiff.

On an aside, always thought Bale gets a pretty rough ride with the whole golf thing. It’s surely far better being out doing relatively light exercise than sitting at home playing PlayStation or drinking all day in the taverna. Guess it was an easy thing for the Spanish press to go after him with, as he seems like quite a boring person.

new keeper......
at 12:43 16 Feb 2022

I’ve been pretty impressed with FF. not sure he’s worth another mega contract, cheers for that Les. But he’s shown to be more than capable recently. There is something that’s a bit fragile though, and things could unravel quickly and he could just as easily disappear and not play for the rest of the session than play every game. I have no idea what was wrong with him before, mental health issues? But hopefully whatever it was is in the past. McCarthy should definitely be shipped out, he’s had more than enough chances.

Another manager could get so much more from them

Hugely encouraging and the new owner effect is incredibly positive. With a bit of money in the transfer fund then let’s see where Ralph can take us.

I personally hope we carry on with our transfer policy (controversial)
at 19:42 29 Jan 2022

It depends, doesn’t it? The current policy is fine for now but we all know it’s incredibly risky. The aim is surely not to buy gambles and punts but actually purchase proven players. Seems we’re a long way off that.

Different ways of looking at this though. £100k is £5m or so per year. Tyson Fury made nearly x3 that in one night last year. Sport is about tv money and the top players, fighters etc are the superstars that drive these mega deals. It seems obscene if compared to a nurse’s salary but not if compared to a top actor or singer.

It is fantastic that Gao has gone, most of us have waited a while for this day.

No Leveraging Or Borrowing By Sport Republic
at 19:25 4 Jan 2022

Doesn’t the club already have huge debts? So would it even have been possible for a new owner to leverage against an already heavily in debt entity? I’d like to know how the new owners are going to address the debt we already have.

I do this all the time when Saints play Brentford, Shef Utd or similar and think it must be a cup game. Then of course they usually beat us. Also I often briefly think of teams as they used to be. For example think that Norwich are going to be pushing for Europe as they did in the 90s or St James’ Park is a certain defeat.

Brown trouser time for Prince Andrew?
at 20:18 3 Jan 2022

I’m pro royals, but if Andrew has done anything wrong then I hope he gets the heaviest punishment going. The guy could have any call girl he wanted, yet if the allegations are true he’d in the literal sense be a kiddy fiddler. Even if the allegations aren’t true, his friendship with Epstein and Maxwell is awful for the royals. Even the name Maxwell should have sent alarm bells at the time to the Windsors. It seems no one did their diligence on these people and Andrew was probably to some degree used by Epstein.

Bertrand & Vestergaard On For Leicester In Double Substitution
at 15:59 26 Dec 2021

Don’t know why there are so many bitter comments about these two. Bertrand was pretty good for us over several years and Vest was alright but it wasn’t the end of the world when he left. Bit surprising they ended up at a pretty strong Leicester, but no doubt it’s because Bertrand is English and experienced and Vest had a strong Euros plus has premier league experience. So not that weird.

Player Welfare
at 09:27 24 Dec 2021

Do the people you know have millions of people round them world scrutinising everything they do? I’m really not a premier league footballer apologist, but I see his point of view. If say Tom Hanks did 20 films instead of 3 or 4 a year then people will probably say there’s some proper rubbish performances in those films as there would be. Or if a band churned out 5 albums in a year rather one, the chances are they won’t be as good. But they’ll be no doubt well paid. These are probably better examples than your mates, as football is really the entertainment industry.

Going against the grain here as I can kind of see his point. Liverpool are in every competition going and they might well end up playing 70 odd games. They have a big squad but Henderson is usually in those match day squads. So I’m not sure an athlete can perform to a high standard that often. In this day and age the data side is ridiculous and he probably sees on Twitter or wherever people debating if he’s past it. If he played in most other elite sports like golf, tennis etc. he’d be able to pick and choose which tournaments he plays, but in football the player is simply told when they’ll play.

No doubt he’s well paid but even at say £6m or whatever he gets a year, the chances are rather than mixing with nhs nurses and cleaners, he’s more likely to be in circles of other millionaires who probably do a lot less than he does. A top London estate agent, financial broker will make a few million on one deal, so Henderson’s salary is although huge to us not in terms of the really wealthy.

Ultimately footballers are entertainers and their job is to sell tickets and sky subscriptions. I guess he feels if he’s too knackered to do that something needs to be done. It’s an unusual situation though as Liverpool will probably play more games than almost any other club. I don’t think Saints players are going to face this problem of playing too many games anytime soon.

I must be in the minority then, as I’m looking forward to the World Cup. But much like the construction workers who weren’t forced to travel to take dangerous construction jobs to earn a lot more than jobs back home to build the stadia, no one is forced to watch the games on telly. I’m not in any way condoning the neglecting of Heath and Safety which clearly has happened. But I’m sure if we look back at the building of many of Britain’s most impressive historical buildings we’ll no doubt find similar. The issue with Qatar is they haven’t caught up to the western standards, but other than shiny malls, they’re not western, so there’s no point trying to judge them through western standards.

Your DNA from covid-19 test swabs is now up for sale
at 10:51 22 Nov 2021

Perfectly summarised.

On the subject of dna or samples being retained we should be fookin grateful if they were (they aren’t of course though in this instance). As sequencing will ultimately lead to an end of a host of now life threatening conditions and cancer survival rates which are rubbish in the U.K. will for example in time dramatically improve. Why are so many people so scared of medicine and scientific research?

Black face though has never really been acceptable though has it? Even in the 1970s it was racist and it’s racist now. Only difference is black communities are now able to have a platform to be heard. Lenny Henry talks about this in a few interviews, think he mentions it with the one with Louis Theroux on BBC sounds. Lenny as a young entertainer reluctantly took gigs where he was a warm up for minstrels. He knew it was wrong then and it still is now. This isn’t in Hales’s case the woke brigade, it’s the basic decency brigade. Alex Hales, by the way sounds to me like an absolute moron.

The thing I would most like to see change at Saints...
at 21:44 9 Nov 2021

Assumed it’s because we’ve been awful in general at defending for so long it’s all hands on deck type of attitude for corners. Statistically hardly any goals are ever scored as a result of a corner so it’s probably a good idea to not have everyone back.

Aston Villa Target Hasenhuttl And Steven Gerrard To Replace Dean Smith
at 14:12 8 Nov 2021

Well RH has done a good job keeping us up, it’s hard to forgive two 9-nils. It’s surely unheard of for a manager to survive two of those. As a few comments above if we can find a half decent replacement I won’t lose too much sleep over him leaving. But it’s not a great time as he’s got us playing arguably best in a long while.
