A night when all 11 had to perform and they did. 2 cleared off line that should have gone in and despite all their possession in 2nd half, they had only 1shot on target. The 2 standouts for me were Armstrong and Bella-Kotchap.

| Southampton V Chelsea Matchday Thread on 21:42 - Aug 30 by A1079 | Great result but a great all round team performance. Not a bad player in those that played for Saints tonight. We could/should have won by more (which would have avoided the slightly shredded nerves in the last 10 minutes). Not going to get carried away as we have been here before but tonight in this game could not have asked for more from our players. |
Solid showing from all!! get in

I'm enjoying watching Saints again, it's been a long time since I said that. 7 points before end of August is a very pleasant shock. I thought the team selection was wrong but I'm happy to be wrong. Now let's back it up with another 3 points against Wolves.

The way the game is being refereed this season is to the detriment of the big clubs that are full of elegent players used to getting a free kick whenever there is minor contact. It will even the league up a bit and force flair players to either toughen up or become peripheral. Unfortunately this won't go down well with the big 6 so I'd expect it all to change again next season. Enjoy it while we can...

Yep, he was excellent and so pleased he got a goal. Hopefully it will have given him some confidence. Still feel we need another strong clinical player up front but every player put in a shift. Che Adams worked so hard and held the ball up well, Bella-Kotchap superb again as was Salisu alongside him, KWP was his reliable 100% - I could list all the players and I doubt any of them deserve less than an 8 out of 10 - Bazunu didn't have a lot to do but he did what he had to when he should and he looks comfortable between the sticks. Ralph got it right tonight and he made good subs at the right time. Credit where credit is due for him, the coaching team and the players.

Agree, still need a centre back assuming one will leave, and a strong striker as well as another CM if Romeu is off as suspensions and injuries could leave us struggling, but the first 13 or 14 look stronger than they have done for years

Agree totally Bicester. We need a bit of depth for when the injuries come or form starts to drop. We also need someone who can take more of the chances we are creating and if Bednarek and/or Stephens leaves then we will need some extra cover. Personally (and some of this is sentiment I will admit) but I would love to see Romeu stay and see out his career with us. He has been such a player for us over the years, but I appreciate there is little room for sentiment in football or for that matter business. If he does move on, then I hope it is abroad and also we can give him a send off and he does not just go unrecognised.

An injury that shouldn't have happened had the linesman flagged for offside when he saw that it was offside instead of waiting til the end of that piece of play! Not his fault as that's the rules now, but what if it was a leg break or something

From what I saw of Broja I'm not too bothered he didn't stay. Lots of pressure but not a lot came of it Cundy aldo sain Che was MOTM and can't really argue with that but we could have picked any of them for that accolade Great win and performance, now let's build on that

And 7th in the table. Under Ralph, we will probably lose to Brentford, but nights like these are worth it. An absolutely fantastic performance to a man.

Well in all fairness it’s how it’s officiated in the lower leagues, and how all games should be officiated anyway! As footballs a contact sport, and outstrengthening/shoulder barging/ pressing etc opponents is part of the game, and unless done off of the ball or with excessive force, shouldn’t ever be a foul, yet in the past it’s been given many times. But thankfully they’re changing it back to what it should be and allowing the contact and physicality that the prem and English football is known for, and allows the game to be more fee flowing with less soft fouls and simulation around.

Well he was walking at the end of the game by himself, and Ralph’s just said that he will be out for a few weeks, but hopefully he might be back in time for the Villa game, but I’d of thought he’d almost certainly be back in time for the Everton game.

Yeah but then you get the issue I’d what happens when the linesmen messes up? As I remember that exact thing happened when Man City played in the first season VAR was used (I think it was against West Brom or Cardiff if I recall correctly) as the linesmen flagged, but as there was a goal scoring oppertunity the ref played on and city scored. But there was a lot of controversy as the attacker was onside so the offside wouldn’t count, but the defenders weren’t happy as they didn’t really go for it as they just presumed that it would be overruled even if it did go in. So unfortunately it’s just one of those things that until there aren’t any linesman anymore for offsides and it’s just VAR with some sort of bot, that we’ll always have that issue.
