We did make Lloris make more saves but a couple of the efforts I would have saved as the shots were tame. Immediately after we equalised Rabiot could have scored and a minute or so before the winner, Giroud should have scored unmarked in the area. Two important saves by Pickford at the time.
It is an opportunity lost with potentially Morocco and Croatia left in the way to win it and also for the fact France are missing first teamers like Benzema, Kante, Pogba and a few others. Still I can take the let down as the R's and England never fail to deflate me as I am conditioned to these results...

Dourgate needs replacing as we were far too respectful and pedestrian first half Awful subs I mean Grealish with 80 Seconds left on the clock? Really?
This debate been done and i standby my conviction - new man needed. What you up to Poch? (Although my choice remains Wenger or Klinsman which is mental !!!)
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Very fair post here ManinBlack I thought france had the better chances and Pickford pulled off a couple of excellent saves . I thought france would really miss the quality of Benzema,Kante ,Pogba and almost more important Kimbempe who would have shut down that side Saka and Kane ran riot on in the first half. But to be fair they played to win and not for penalties and taking the lead twice against England is not easy. Both teams went for it so a brilliant game for nuetrals and tight margians won it. Cannot believe Jack Grealish did not come on after an hour to run France ragged but its irrelevant now

Still collecting my thoughts but overriding emotion is fine margins and genuinely thought it’d be England’s night tonight. Gutted.
My one issue is taking off Foden and Saka for Rashford and Sterling. We lost all of our guile and ingenuity for two pacy wingers chasing a goal. Didn’t make much sense to me but I suspect the game was won and lost well before the last 10 mins.

This one felt less painful than Croatia or Italy for me, weirdly, even though it’s the one we most deserved to win. We played really well 2nd half, shackled mbappe superbly, and were the marginally better team overall, but we just didn’t take our chances and France took theirs. On another day with a less useless ref we get another penalty, and a host of additional free kicks including the one which should have been given ahead of the opening goal, or that Maguire header goes in, and we win comfortably. But hey, France are an excellent team and scored two great goals: there’s no shame whatsoever in losing that game, in my opinion.
Some quibbles with the subs - can’t understand taking Saka off and not using Grealish - but overall I thought Southgate did a really good job and deserves to see out his contract until 2024. It feels like we’re performing consistently well at major tournaments for the first time in a generation, and if we keep doing that then sooner or later it’s going to click for us.

totally agree: he has done ok in 3 tournaments but we will win nothing under Southgate. Time for a change as we have nothing to lose.

I have to say that I find the reluctance to use Grealish as a starter baffling.
Would any other country eschew his talent?

"We will win nothing under Southgate" Strange comment. We literally would have won the Euros had a couple of penalties gone the other way.
Unlucky today. Don't agree with the Mount or Sterling subs, he didn't get those right IMO but we were by far the better team today, which seems to be the view of the neutral press here in the US. That's 4 excellent performances out of 5 in the world cup.
Southgate has to take some credit for that.

I think the nagging issue with GS, as well as he has done - and he has done, and he has set a bloody high benchmark - is that final step between glory and nearly beyond him?
Yes, we got very close, again. We do have a golden generation, again. Are we going to take that final step or fall short, again.
He really does/did deserve to win something. But subject to injury/fatigue, his substitutions last night were baffling.
But as someone said above, and as we all know too well, the fine margins that decide these things: France's top scorer scored when it mattered, England's didn't.
Shame, England were very good last night, but like the Italy and Croatia games before, a golden opportunity was there for the taking, and we've pulled up short, again.

Good post, Planet Honneywood .
A view on the penalty not given, with the proviso that I was in the pub and couldn't hear what was said................ Second guessing the ref, but for big decisions in the box of which he wasn't totally sure of, the ref seemed happy to let VAR make the call, and that's not a problem in itself. However......the 'clear and obvious mistake' bit then needs to go - he hasn't not given it because he didn't think it wasn't a foul, he's left it to VAR as they have the best view. There's a difference.
On the performance, our potential big game changer who is on form is Maddison. Talking to Karl after the match, he spoke of how British football management is often very rigid in it's structure, and how Foden seemed to have been told to mind his defensive duties. Belgium twice, Croatia, Italy and France - we play someone who it takes something a bit special to unlock, and we fail. Not because of a lack of quality players imho, but because Southgate is too conservative in his set up.
Sterling shouldn't have been in contention for this game, because of the disruption he has had to endure. He has my sympathy in that, not his fault. But that substitution felt like a gesture.

Been semi-boycotting this WC (i.e. avoiding the TV cos I don't want to add to FIFA's viewing figures for the farce.) Thought about this one but sorta knew that either we'd be rubbish and I'd be deflated or we'd be good but lose anyway and I'd be gutted.
They'll rightly be a lot of analysis of what went wrong, selections, substitutions, tactics etc and discussion of Southgate and Kane. But one thing that'll probably be overlooked is Southgate's comments:
“As you’d expect he is very, very low, but he has got nothing to reproach himself for,” said Southgate afterwards. “We are in the position we are as a team because of his leadership and goals.”
And, as if to anticipate the morning tabloid headlines, Southgate then added: “No recriminations, the players have been brilliant and we win and lose as a team.”
Compare that with people making up playground nicknames. as if that constitutes anything other than self-embarrassment. Southgate is a leader who set the tone and spirit of the squad. Compare that with what he inherited. You see the same with McCullum and Stokes in the cricket team (except probably better.)
All that stuff Beale spouted about integrity may have been lies at one level, but it's true at another.

I thought that England were the better team up until the finishing, which is the crucual part.
Thought the first peno call was marginal, and second was given, the third was given but no red card, if I recall, because he was not in possesion of the ball(?) but that England could have had a few more free kicks.
Thought that a top class goalie would've saved France's first.
England are a genuine and consistent contender now, but need to find a way to win. Last night, the subs didn't improve the team and Southgate strikes me as a Manager who is really great 364 days of the year, but lacking on the one day that truly matters.
Disappointed for England, sympathies to you all.
"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
Southgate is so far and away the best England manager of my lifetime it's ridiculous.
What he coaxed out of a poor squad in 2018 was incredible, he harnessed Wembley in 2021 to take us to penalties in the final and now he's standing toe to toe with the best side in the world and unluckily losing.
The calls for Poch or Tuchel are insane. Look at how Enrique and Flick did at this World Cup. International management is a different beast, and Southgate is good at it.
Quibble over his subs all you like, but Mount came on and won the penalty, Saka was injured so came off, and Rashford puts that free kick 2 inches lower he's another super sub.
Genuinely the best England team I've seen in my life. Never seen us take a game to such a good opponent like that before

I seem to have had a thread deleted overnight. That's a first for me. Asking the question about whether the EPPP rules designed to produce better English players has been a success. 10 years on I'm struggling to see any benefit. Quarter finals of the World Cup. Countless football clubs in financial turmoil.

I think the brutal reality is we still haven't produced a top world class player who can produce the moment of magic since Gazza. The current crop are very very good and a massive improvement on players of the past 25 years, however the team lack a player who can unlock the opposition from nothing. We lack a Zidane, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi or Mbappe. They are world class. Unfortunately Grealish, Madison, Foden and Saka are not in that class, but are as I've said, very very good. Until we produce that player I think we will always be destined to be the bridesmaid, never the bride annoyingly.

Not digging anyone out on this forum, but so many salty Scottish, Welsh and Irish on social media tonight.
Maybe they should concentrate on they're own teams and just how shite they are.
I guarantee we'll be the only ones qualifying for the euros and next world cup
Agree, its beyond pathetic and doesn't reflect well on them at all. I have Irish parents myself and am fiercely proud of that fact, but its so small time and needy just being desperate for England to lose all the time. You do wonder how empty their lives must be if this is their only happiness.
The jocks are worse than the Irish for this stuff, like completely obsessed. Perhaps they should focus more on why Croatia, a country with a smaller population than them, does so well while they can't even get near qualifying.
It was really toxic during the Euros and I logged out of Twitter for about a week after the final. Have also logged out prior to England games during this world cup and will probably stay off for a couple more days while they get the reminaing semen out of their system and until all the no doubt highly predictable and crappy memes die down.
