The fact that we dominated and won the opening game of the season, away from home at a big club like Sheffield Wednesday, live on Sky, yet you’re not pleased, says a lot more about you than him.

Where did I say I wasn’t pleased with the win?

What’s the point of dominating the ball if you don’t do anything with it. In the first half 400 odd passes and failed to create a chance.

This will be an interesting thread to revisit in a couple months time, when we can’t score and concede sloppy goals

But did you enjoy the game? Was it nice to see saints playing the opposition off the park? Admit it you loved it but you love a moan. I’m guesssing you’re the wrong side of 60 and a cynical old bugger

Yes! I enjoyed the win.

'nice to see saints playing the opposition off the park?'

If you call having a thousand passes to Wednesdays dozen,so be it.

Why you have to get personal I don't know,I suppose sitting behind a keyboard helps.

I think the point is, Sheffield Wednesday looked poor. The real test will come when playing the likes of Leicester and Leeds - and even an in form Gillingham on Tuesday.

Maybe we made them look poor? All the talk beforehand was of Wednesday being a real test…their aggression…the atmosphere…our weak defence…look at what they did in the Play Off etc.

All I saw was us completely dominate them; we kept the ball lots…looked solid all over the park…neutralised any threat they had…tamed the crowd etc. It was as near a perfect away performance as you can get. But no, lets say we were boring, didn’t do enough in possession and that the opposition were crap.

As I said before, if people can’t get excited and enjoy Fridays performance and result, I don’t think being a Saints supporter is for you.

I enjoyed Friday a lot.

But as I have just said on another thread, I was baffled as to why Sheff Wed’s attack retreated whenever Bazunu or our back four had the ball at their feet.

If they had gone for a more aggressive pressing style from the front, it would have been interesting to see how we would have coped. Based on the Boscombe game, we may well have struggled.

I suspect it’s because all their focus was on nullifying our threats rather than focusing on their own. No matter what people think, we have got better players than most of the teams in the division, so will come up against ultra negative teams a lot. They will see their best chance of beating us as keeping everyone behind the ball, then nicking a goal from a set piece or cross into the box.

Only time will tell if sides get braver against us and whether that plays into our hands or not, but I’m hopeful our class will shine through a lot more than we’re all used to in this league.

I’m watching Leicester v Coventry , what a great game fast flowing attacking football by both sides.

I would suggest both these sides will cause out defense a lot of problems.

If they don't have possession of the ball they won't.

And if they try their fast flowing football (unlike Sheff who kept 11 behind the ball and never got out their half) they'll leave gaps, which will be exploited.

Sunderland pressing pretty high against Ipswich.

Will be an interesting game up there in a few weeks.

They don’t need tippy tappy possession of the ball. A quick incisive break at pace will do us. Not all clubs will not be as passive as shef Wednesday .

We did the double against the side that beat the side we beat the previous season. Still doesn’t really help your case does it?

That’s the same Leicester that finished above us and have won things in recent years.

Ah and a Southampton team that bears no resemblance to our current team, managed to get a 117th minute winner against them. Yes that really is game set and match you ….. ffs

You really are a very odd chap. Constantly picking holes and slagging off your own club just for the sake of it is proper weird, but you keep doing you pal.

Sheffield Wednesday looked like a side who were missing Darren Moore, and Saints should have been at least 3 up by half time. But it was just the one, and in true Saints style as opposed to your suggestion that Saints 'neutralised any threat they had' they equalised.
From then on it was more of the possession with Stephens putting Bazunu under pressure more than once with dodgy back passes, when Saints should have been comfortable and not in danger of dropping two points. Bringing on Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams made the difference.
I never thought it was boring , but the constant passing becomes a bit tedious especially when the opposition can score completely against the run of play.
As a comparison I watched the Leeds v Cardiff game yesterday and I saw players on both sides running at defences, four goals and was entertained. We'll really know how good Saints are when the play the likes of Leeds, Cardiff, Leicester and one or two fancied runners.
I enjoyed the result, but I remain unconvinced at the moment.
Your comment about being a Saints supporter seems rather hollow after all we've had to put up with over the last couple of seasons - it's going take a little longer to get excited this time...

Personally I would prefer winning games than entertainment, most of our games last season were entertainment, the Forest game away was very entertaining, but ultimately I would have preferred us to get behind the ball and not let them get a shot on goal and to have won with our only effort on target.

If we had done that in about 5-6 more games we would have stayed up

Well exactly. We won the game and completely dominated the game. There is that fear that we get 80% possession which should have translated to 5 goals but hey ho as long as we win if we also dominate the game, I'm all for it..
