Youd hope we will improve. At time at one up we slowed to walking pace just knocking passes to each other.
I know it's to draw the opposition out, but what if they dont come out?
We still need to move the ball quickly at times to create chances.
Can't help thinking we would be a real force with a good striker. Someone like Bamford. He's going to get a hatfull in this league.

I think we have a top striker in this league, just keep Che and play him every week, he’ll score plenty

Also to say you’d hope we’ll improve after watching that seems mental, we haven’t played that well for years, I loved that performance, we’ve got some proper miserable fookers supporting saints

Yes, I found it tedious.
It worked against a poor side like Sheffield Wednesday, but will it work against better sides?

It was pretty tedious to watch . There was never any urgency and really the only chance we calved out was Adams goal. Stu Armstrong really looked up for it when he came on. If he’s fit all season and stays he will easily get double figures.

Teams that are direct will cause us all sorts of problems.

What has happened to Bella kotcha?

I was impressed by the disciplined performance and how good it is to get a win at last.
But we were playing a poor S.Wednesday team who drew level until the 87th minute,
We are desperate for a striker and a goalkeeper until those positions are addressed I can see us coming unstuck against better teams.

I’m with you pal. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought we were great.

I really don’t know why these miserable fvckers bother. To pick holes and highlight the negatives in that performance, rather than revel in and enjoy the moment is sad as fvck.

I'm with you both, for a manager to have a plan (which everyone adapted to) change a team from not being able to pass water last season to playing like that, with everyone looking comfortable on the ball and passing to their own players in 5 weeks is pretty much a miracle tbh.
If you limit the other lot to one shot on target in a game, they ain't scoring many are they?, and their goal was flukey .So dominant, only downside was should've won by more.

We've got a few on here who don't really know their football, who'd rather see the likes of dross like Salisu club aimless balls forward in the mixer to the likes of Tall Paul, result being we'll always lose possession or it goes out for a throw. Hopefully them days are gone.

I'd have brought Che on earlier for AA, and we still look dodgy defending high balls in the box, but RM knows a lot more about than game than me, he'll sort it

You're right here. You only need to hear the Sheffield Wednesday fans rave about us, "Saints will win the league" to know just how well we did. We were dominant. We will face tougher tests, but Smallbone, Manning, Tella, Edozie, Stephens have massively improved the effort levels in the team. They all work hard, play with commitment, passion and give their all. Add that to Ward-Prowse and Alcaraz, who have always been decent.

The jury was out when RM first took over, but I have been extremely impressed by how he has conducted himself, his intelligence, how he has spoken about the players, club and fans. And last night you could see it on the pitch. He's another Adkins, in terms of how popular he will become.

How was Wednesdays goal fluky?

The fella who headed the ball back across the box, got a deflection off Smallbone (I think) so the ball didn't go where he intended it to go, and the fella on the line obstructing Banzu was offside.

So not fluky, double fluky

The Wednesday player clearly beat Smallbone to the ball, Smallbone fell forward and the Wednesday player was in line was in line with another Saints player.

But did you enjoy the game? Was it nice to see saints playing the opposition off the park? Admit it you loved it but you love a moan. I’m guesssing you’re the wrong side of 60 and a cynical old bugger

Some may call our possession football boring or non productive, but the way we played out the 9 mins of extra time was top notch

171 passes , 95% possession

The hundreds of passes in front of Shef Wednesday never led to anything. We created one chance from open play all match. It was like watching bored Puels team. Or Ralph’s team that would get down the touch line then turn round and go all the way back to our keeper.

Shef wed were terrible, but their limited ability caused panic in the defense when they turned over the ball and got it forward quickly. When it was 1-1 , that happened and Bednerek managed to get a last gasp lunge in to stop them.

I’m glad we won, makes a change on the opening day, but we have played boring tippy tappy football for 5 years and it’s boring and dosent work unless you are Man City.

It was nothing like Puel and Ralph’s tippy tappy football which was pointless, it was quick and accurate and didn’t end with a pass back to Bazanu to welly it forward, just don’t understand how fans didn’t see how much better it was, I was buzzing afterwards, ah well, I’ll enjoy it.

So after tons of passes how did it end up? It didn’t end up with us creating chances?

Adam Armstrong 2 touches in 25 mins…

Time to get Adam s and Stu on

It's ok having 80% plus possession, BUT we did next to nothing with it, passing backwards and sideways was boring to watch, never the less a win is a win.

It did prove though that we still need a decent 25 goal a season goal scorer, ( who incidentally doesn't forget how to score in the premiership), and a decent goal keeper, Buzuna still looks dogey, and I've absolutely NO confidence in McCarthy. We have however found a new Shane Long, Adam Armstrong ran around like a headless chicken, even had the audacity to claim a goal he knew nothing about. We should of been 4 up at halftime.

The fact that we dominated and won the opening game of the season, away from home at a big club like Sheffield Wednesday, live on Sky, yet you’re not pleased, says a lot more about you than him.

I think the point is, Sheffield Wednesday looked poor. The real test will come when playing the likes of Leicester and Leeds - and even an in form Gillingham on Tuesday.
