Seems to have a very similar managerial CV to Will Still, in fact even less impressive, so how come he is working out at Sunderland.

<Maybe it emphasises that it is not about getting in an experienced man all the time, but getting the right man

Robinson could have come on. Like for like.
Low block and xGing

Yes, Robinson could have come on, I agree. But WS was trying to beef up central midfield defensively at the same time, because Azaz is really an attacking midfielder, that's what his strength is. So what does he do? With Downes and Jander out his options were limited. Bringing on an experienced player who's played defensive midfield before and freeing up Azaz to a more attacking role makes sense - in theory! Unfortunately the only experienced defensive midfielder he had was JS and Azaz played rubbish.

It was a mistake, but the way that some people say this is all some incomprehensible mystery is just b/s. The thinking behind it was pretty clear.

Is it just me, or does the name 'Regis le Bris' sound like some kind of drag queen? Now THAT would be ground breaking...

Perhaps the Sunderland manager doesn’t keep babbling on about xG and low block.
They had f all to lose against Chelsea and went for it. Winning late on 2-1.

Will Still takes off our best player when winning 1-0 and goes 6 at the back against a piss poor Blackburn side.

The rest, is history.

There is no way our current plight is all the fault of Still BUT his selections and ludicrous in game subs are really not helping his cause
The Slack for Leo sub was quite astonishing

Almost every time he makes a sub, players have to move around at the same time.

This type of approach might work fine on FIFA or Championship Manager, but in the real world it just adds an additional bit of disruption to the change that the substitution is already bringing.

Like for like subs are always better from that perspective and when you've got a side like ours that is already struggling to work as a team, this sort of thing just doesn't help.

Players are not chess pieces.

Adjusting positions with substitutions is commonplace with every manager. It happens more often than not. Frequently subs run on passing on instructions for fellow players.

But ok, if you prefer just like for like subs, what like for like substitution should he have made to strengthen central midfield? Or do you think he was wrong about needing fresh legs in midfield at that stage and we should have just carried on with Azaz and Charles there for the full 90 regardless of how they were doing or how tired they were getting?

A like for like substitution for Scienza plus a like for like substitution in central midfield would have been 2 substitutions instead of 1. Are you sure that 2 substitutions would be less disrupting than 1?

I was making a general point about Still and his tinkering. It's a valid point and I don't need a lesson on what a substitution is.

And to be fair to him, with so little practical experience he can be forgiven for treating each game like a crossword puzzle. You seem to like but it's not for me.

You were saying he'd done the wrong thing, so I was just asking you what the right thing would have been. Too many people just slag him off for "obviously" getting it all wrong, but don't seem so sure themselves about what the right answer was.

The 'right thing' would be to concentrate more on creating a settled side where everyone has a better chance of knowing what they are meant to be doing.

So less tinkering.

If he was going to bring Stephens on, it should have been for Azaz, not Scienza.

Azaz has done the square root of zilch in a Saints shirt.

Fair enough, but that's difficult with injuries, illness and lack of form among the squad.

As you probably know, he was advised that Scienza couldn't do the full match. Are you saying that he should have ignored that advice?

I agree about Azaz. In defence of WS, it looks like he was moving him out of the central midfield 2 role to more of FA's natural, attacking position, in the hope that he'd contribute something there. Unfortunately, FA continued to contribute sweet FA.

Still hung himself out to dry in the order in which he made the substitutions.

He made it look as if he was trying to do a wacky change that nobody else would think of.

If he had brought on Robinson for Scienza, and then Stephens for Azaz, he would have been a lot smarter.

OK, I'd agree, but what you're talking about is the presentation i.e. how it appears to the fans rather than what it really means on the field from a football point of view.

The one difference is that you end up with Robinson instead of Azaz in your plan, which makes sense. We still would have had a dodgy midfield though. I don't think there's any way around that because he'd run out of options by then.

Our issues in my opinion have very little to do with the manager right now. I don't actually think Still is a bad manager I just think he's got an impossible job.

The main issues we have are an ownership who think they're cleverer than they are, a recruitment team who are f*cking sh*t at their job, players who have ideas above their station, and a lack of a striker or decent keeper.

I f*cking despise these owners, they're proper games workshop nonces and have built possibly the sh*ttest multi club model in existence.

Plus they're so f*cking arrogant, i don't think there's a single fan who can't see our problems but instead of spending money on the two positions they need to spend money on they buy a sh*tload of "potential" players who don't make it and we can't shift.

Spot on.

I’ve got a soft spot for Sunderland, loved the Sunderland til I Die series, their fans are always sound (and arent Newcastle). Fair play to their young owner and manager. I’d like them to do well (apart from when they beat Everton on Monday).

Le Bris seems to have gone under the radar given the job he has done and is doing. He seems to keep out of the limelight too. No histronics, no look at me, look at me.
