I get what the OP means, we were missing someone in the middle for crosses on several occasions today with Kone out wide and Kolli wasn't in a position in front of goal. Bennie seems to get in the right positions to get the chances which today gave the team something different and he seems to have good work rate. Improved my hopes for him despite missing the opportunities but really that more of a comment on how unconvinced I've been with him so far, so fair play to him and the coaches. |  | | |

I've disagreed with everything going down this thread and then I got to this message and, by Christ!!, I have to disagree HUGELY!
Kolli's all round play is on another level to Bennies.
His link up and hold up play was very good again today, stretched PNE whenever we went forward when he was on the pitch and took up some intelligent positions and did his fair share of closing down.
Bennie runs around like a competetion winner - 10/10 for effort and endeavour but I think it shows time and time again that neither he nor the club are sure exactly where he should be played. He's missed three sitters in two games now and, IMHO, is miles from this level... currently.
I hope the lad does well and scores more screamers a la Hull for the club; but he needs so much work on his bread n butter game it's unreal..... [checks Glossary] -- "needs a loan".
Hopefully he'll be banging them in for Wycombe next season. |

Ignoring all the who's better arguments.
Bennie does seem to have the knack of being in the right place at the right time, and his movement in the box is very good.
Against Watford he was the one who Vale aimed at that led to Smyth scoring. Two more chances today.
He scored a cracker at Hull and a tap in at Plymouth.
He was meant to go on loan in January, but due to injury to Obiku he couldn't. I don't think anyone can say he has let us down.
A good season long loan in L1 and I think we might have a very good striker on our hands. Let's not forget he is only 19yo. | |

I thought Obikwa was supposed to be back by now? Bennie has to score at least one of those chances yesterday. I’ll be honest. I’m not convinced by him, but let’s see. We still have Lloyd, Sutton and Celar to come back next season! So as it stands we have the following:
1. Kone
2. Burrell
3. Kolli
4. Obikwa
5. Lloyd
6. Celar
7. Sutton
Hopefully we can get a buyer for Lloyd and Celar. Sutton will need to go on loan again. | | | |

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Bennie was signed as a forward more of a wide midfielder. I have no problem with him at all. I see a young intelligent player learning his trade and learning at a fare pace. Sure he’s going to make mistakes, and making them makes you a better player. He will have now in his locker the feeling of not scoring the winner yesterday and that will hurt but he will learn from it and maybe next time he might do something different that would see the ball hit the back of the net unless the keeper makes an error extraordinary save something like the SheffW keeper did yesterday denying a certain goal and where the forward did absolutely nothing wrong. But then I didn’t think Bennie did much wrong with his shot, he was composed, and he didn’t blast it, rather he placed it and was somewhat unlucky as it got tangled between the keepers legs, another time it could easily have gone through them. I’d rather that than seeing his blast it wildly over the bar, Hugill like. But he is learning and as people have said he is getting in the right positions, indeed alas for an inch or so he could have been the match winner at Oxford.
So for me I think we have a good player on our hands, only 19 and still in the very early stages of his career. Indeed we have a pretty good team on our hands, many of them this season making their championship debuts and are not looking out of place. All of them can only get better. I’m starting to look forward to next season. We are a much better team than last season and hopefully we will kick on again next. Onwards and upwards. | |

We've used him all over the place, including at full back on both sides once or twice. I think for the Aussie U20s he generally plays as a striker.
I agree with you, I like him. Energetic and athletic, decent player for his age. Not as good technically as Morgan/Vale/Kolli but started playing at a lower standard so that's fair enough and he's younger than the latter two.
We have a lot of very young players now and they're all making mistakes and getting things wrong and sometimes that's going to be a stray pass that doesn't lead to anything and gets forgotten and sometimes that's going to be missing a winner and everyone analyses it to death. The difference for me is that all of them look like they've got something about them and what they need is minutes to add experience to ability. Compare that to a few years ago where we were running out 'young' players in their mid 20s who were never going to be good enough, and have mostly done nothing at all since they left - it's a good development. | | | |

You'd much rather a youngster who can do that but can't finish than someone who doesn't get there in the first place - Kolli was much the same when he first broke through, and his finishing is much better now.
Give him as many minutes as possible in the last few games, see if he can get a couple of goals, then get him at least 6 months on loan starting every week and see if the finishing improves. Definitely a player in there if it does. | | | |

How is Bennie out of his depth? Esquadinha yes, but no way is Bennie.
Unless you play these kids there is no way of telling if they are ever going to be able to step up and Bennie has not let himself or the team down. Got a couple of goals and should have scored Saturday.
I'd love to know from those that have already written him off what exactly he needs to do. Thankfully we have coaches who are qualified to spot those that could step up. | |

I tend to agree that in order to improve he will probably be better off on a short-term loan to a L2 side as Eze and Chair both had. 3 months at a side like Barnet or Crawley could boost his confidence and improve his all round game.
Players like Bennie, Adamson, Pearman Smith etc are at an age and development stage were they should be knocking on the door for 1st team football and going out on loan to L1 or L2 will be far more beneficial than playing for the development squad. 15-20 games at those levels will tell the club's coaches a lot more than training and games against kids at DS level.
I would add that I was pleased to see Bennie at least get into those positions to score. | | | |

Some people on this thread need to get a reality check.
Forming judgment on a 19 year old with a handful of minutes in men's football is a sorry indictment of the of the mentality of some of our fan base.
He, like Kolli, has shown meaningful progress this season and is worthy of our support.
Someone suggesting him not bagging one of his chances has ended our chances of the playoffs is laughable. There's plenty more obvious reasons for our not reaching the playoffs.
Sheer slack-mindedness of the sort that is going to continue this country's decline for the next decade or more. | | | |
