| Signings that exceeded your expectations 12:44 - Jan 10 with 1391 views | Mrs_M | I’ll start the ball rolling with a fantastic signing in the late 1990s and that is the one and only young Chris Marsden. He was a football genius in my view. Who is your player that exceeded your expectations? | | | | |
| Signings that exceeded your expectations on 13:21 - Jan 10 with 1043 views | PatfromPoole | Going back in time, Paul Willo Williams would be a contender. Nowhere near as bad as feared. Carlton Palmer was also excellent for his first season. Going up to date, I would have to say Danny Ings; I wasn’t expecting that much from him in truth. | |

Good shout re Beattie. Remember coming back from a painful 3-0 midweek away defeat at Leeds; it was near the start of the Great Escape season. Ran into that West Ham pundit gobsh1te Tony Gale at services on the M1. Think he had played with Beattie at Blackburn. I asked him what he thought of Beattie (as we had just signed him in the Davies swap deal) and Gale said Beattie wasn’t good enough and would never make it.

| Signings that exceeded your expectations on 14:57 - Jan 10 with 952 views | ericofarabia | Surely Sir Rickie Lambert. I think its safe to say he probably exceeded even his own dreams with us. Some of Lawries end of their career signings were sheer masterclass as well, none more so than Alan Ball and his last one Jimmy case. | | | |

Up until the Millwall cup game he was getting abuse from certain sections of the crowd and was seen as a very poor signing...but arguably scored one of the greatest goals ever scored at St Mary's and was missed terribly after his departure.. His missus was very pleasing on the eye also.

Mark Wright who came in as an add on for us getting Keith Cassells from Oxford! He didn't do too badly did he but whatever happened to Cassells?? Another Lawrie find

Not just then either. He was a regular for the boo boys, at West Brom away in his second season there were a load of fans on his back the whole game. I think it was WBA at home which was his home debut and he was getting ironically cheered by our dinlow fans.

It was bizarre some of the shit he got when he was with us ..and once he had left he was deemed a pivotal player .

Didn't use it down here quite as much as when at Stoke though he was playing under "Long Ball Pulis"

| Signings that exceeded your expectations on 17:56 - Jan 10 with 800 views | A1079 | Some good names there, but I think I would also add David Armstrong and Glenn Cockerill. The former was excellent, but I didn't realise he would make such an impact when he joined us and Cockerill I did not really know and his first game was away to Luton, where I think we lost 6-0 (I was there) and I was not that impressed. But then he became quite pivotal in midfield. Mick Mills and Jimmy Case were revelations as well. I know they had already made names for themselves but they were supposedly at the back end of their careers, but they made such a difference. Lawrie was adept at bringing in highly recognised players who were entering the twilight of playing and fitting them into the team quickly with some youngsters e.g Steve Moran, Steve Williams etc. | | | |

Didn’t we sign Monkou in a “double swoop” with Perry Groves?

Monkou came to us from Chelsea. Groves from Arsenal no? Monkou was one of my faves of that era. Great guy [Post edited 10 Jan 2020 20:02]

Ah ok. This brings back a memory.......anyone recall Saints lining up five players for a photoshoot on the Dell pitch in the 90's? Think it was Dave Jones' signings. Seem to remember David Howells being one, but cannot remember the other 3 or 4......possibly David Hurst, Stuart Ripley. Surely not Patrick Colleter, Lee Todd and Jonah as well?
