BoJo the clown on 11:28 - Oct 13 with 2237 views | dirk_doone | I find him difficult to dislike. He is a charming buffoon and his personality obviously appeals to voters. He is only doing and saying what Dominic Cummings instructs him to and he knows that worked very well for him in both the referendum and the general election. He is always a bit lost and ums and errs when he's asked surprise questions and has to deviate from the script. I think that's why Cummings has recruited a new government spokesperson to deal with questions from the press. The buck stops with Cummings. [Post edited 13 Oct 2020 11:30]

He was ok as mayor of London where he could shag around all day and do little damage to the country, but now he is PM at a crucial time in this country’s history he and Cummings are free to do untold damage. How anyone can take this bumbling buffoon seriously is beyond me but when you see the likes of Gove waiting in the wings to take over, things don’t look much better in the long run. His chaotic personal life doesn’t get any better either. There are rumours flying around that baby Wilf is Zac Goldsmiths, that Johnson is having at least one affair and that he and Carrie are on the verge of splitting up. Happy days.

The personal lives of both Boris and Trump are obviously much admired by the voters. They have both shown they are 'real men' who can put it about a bit. In many ways the leaders we choose reflect the aspirations of the average man in the street. When I lived in Saudi Arabia, the fact that King Abdulaziz, the founder of the House of Saud, had fathered more than a hundred children was considered a sign of his greatness. If more people had known about his private life, Wilt Chamberlain would surely have been a shoe-in for president. How did he ever find time to play basketball? "In his 1991 book A View from Above, the NBA Hall of Famer claimed to have slept with 20,000 different women over the course of his life. "Yes, that's correct, 20,000 different ladies," he wrote. "At my age, that equals out to having sex with 1.2 women a day, every day since I was 15 years old." Years later, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino admitted his own mother was one of them." because they are paralysed with this course of action. Look at the media briefing yesterday evening. Not one question about whether this is the right course of action, all about not locking down enough and why are we not giving more money to the north. He has the impossible job. Locking down bits at a time, whilst not absolutely destroying the economy, which will kill even more people as said, even the WHO are now saying 'lockdown' is worse.

I think you're right, Jay: you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Even the governments which appeared at the time to be the most sensible ones, for taking stringent lockdown measures as early as possible, are now seeing coronavirus cases spiralling out of control in their countries. I'm not sure that any of us could have done any better. Only remote, sparsely populated islands seem to have come out of this relatively unscathed and it will probably catch up with them eventually.

I heard questions asking about the use of lockdown. Given that we have been told that this virus could kill north of 2 million people in this country alone, clearly stringent methods need to be used to combat it. As you quoted the WHO, they have been saying for some time now that track and trace methods need to be used, yet some 7 months in we still don’t have an effective system up and running despite being told months ago that ours was world beating.

No questions on whether lockdown (or the severity of it) is the right course of action. Or even reference to the WHO's statement that lockdown is actually worse. I agree, track and trace needs to be better. As the people keep telling us, we are at the tipping point of this at the mo (apparently)... [Post edited 13 Oct 2020 14:09]

BoJo the clown on 12:45 - Oct 13 by kingslandstand1 | Dirk, you're not supposed to reply to a let's have another go at Boris with a sensible, reasoned view, you should know that by now My sit on the fence view is that it's all very well having a dig at the poor bloke whenever the opportunity arises, but I actually wonder what Corbyn would have done if, God forbid, he got in. Although Sir Kier comes across as sort of sensible and trustworthy, he doesn't actually come up with any solutions or options other than criticise anything that's said or done after the event as does everybody else in the anti Boris brigade Happy Christmas everyone! Oh, I do not agree with the 10pm shutting of pubs btw if that wins me any Brownie points. If everyone acted sensibly and realised how bad this virus was we would not be in this sh1t position we are now |
Of course, we shall never know how a Labour government under Corbyn would have handled this crisis and it is easy to say that they would not have done any better. However given that socialists generally put the welfare of people before making money and Labour seem to have more faith in the NHS and local health organisations (rather than handing out plump contracts to their mates companies with zero experience) it could well be safe to assume that we would generally have been better off in terms of health care and the handling of the pandemic both locally and nationally.

you believe 'better' is lockdown harder, for longer and pay people more for doing so. nil thought to the consequences of that course of action. Like the WHO now acknowledge

I agree re what you have said about jobs for the boys etc, and the post was slightly tongue in cheek (I don't do heavy politics on here!), but realistically nobody knows what would have happened either way and we are all, inc politicians, going around quite blind as this is all a first for everybody world wide, so no precedent My gripe is the political point scoring coming across rather than all party banging of heads together to actually agree the best way forward

Other parties have been keen to work together with this government from the start of this crisis, but all requests to help and assist have been rejected. In most aspects they’ve been supported busy other parties But as a result of not engaging with other parties they’ve left themselves open to the criticism they are now receiving.

You seriously believe that more than 2 million people will die if there is another lockdown for reasons other than Covid? You seem stuck on this whole lockdown thing. You do realise if they had sorted a proper and comprehensive track and trace system by now a lockdown would not be necessary?
