Two points dropped there Would have liked to see N’Lundulu on for 10 Ings looks off the pace a bit [Post edited 16 Dec 2020 19:57]

Shame we couldn’t get winner, but would have been happy with draw beforehand, and now third above Leicester, and were technically top again for an hour

That said, after a good competent first half we have started the second half poorly, almost too casual and lazy. I can see Arsenal going on and winning this now. That goal by a player who has not been able to score recently can change the confidence. Is it just me that feels Ings has been off his game? Almost forgot it was playing. |
Yes I think Ings still isn’t 100% since his op

| Arsenal Game Matchday Thread on 20:02 - Dec 16 with 835 views | Saintsforeverj | A good point away from home in the end. For some reason, I sensed some nervousness from Saints, hence Arsenal nearly winning it at the end. We looked worried to lose to 10 men, and they were so compact we couldn't through. Oh well, a good point. [Post edited 16 Dec 2020 20:03]

After that, we were poor, lethargic and showed no urgency against 10 men. Lazy passing from Bertrand, switching off at the back and perhaps were too complacent. We could have gone top (temporarily) with a win FFS !!

If so please do as I’m struggling to see what we are trying to achieve with it. That part of London has never been a happy hunting ground for us but today was an opportunity to change that. We looked timid. KWP and Walcott were the stand out players today for us.

Never have understood why he dislikes us. Maybe he has forgotten that it was Laurie that took him from Weymouth non-league mediocrity to the first division and riches (of the day) But when he did go to Villa, Chelsea etc I always thought he was over-rated but he did get to play for the Republic quite a few times!

Agree with all that Timsaint. I was underwhelmed by our performance in the second half and especially the way we started it. We seemed lazy and lethargic or complacent - not sure which. If we are serious at challenging at the top end of the table we need to do better than this against these sides. But, if I am honest, did I expect us to be in this position this season - probably not, but just a pang of disappointment at not beating a poor performing Arsenal.

The only logic is the offside trap but we don’t seem to have perfected that like Liverpool did in the last couple of years.

Not with the way Arsenal were set up at the end. Bringing Redmond and Djenepo on was the right thing to do and nearly worked. People always go on about how you should beat a team when they go down to 10 men but it’s never as simple as that as most teams go into ultra defensive mode and completely shut down the spaces that we would normally exploit

Exactly because of the way Arsenal were set up at the end. N'Lundulu is a big, fast striker who can muscle his way through defences. He'd have shot a few times too, which our players were rarely trying. Incredibly, Arsenal had more shots on target than we did in that game. [Post edited 16 Dec 2020 20:46]

| Arsenal Game Matchday Thread on 20:53 - Dec 16 with 639 views | Berber | Arsenal defended exceptionally well once down to 10 men, compact and deep. We could learn a lesson or two about passing to runners through the defence. Aubemeyang took his goal well. Overall, we were the better team, and definitely 2 points dropped, again. Walcott should have been subbed earlier, was giving the ball away far too much as the game went on. Great goal though. | |

Agree with this N’Lundulu for Ings with 10 left would have rattled their defence

That’s why I find the talk of us going for the league a bit cringey to be honest. Ralph is working wonders with these players but the squad does not have enough depth or quality to be seriously challenging for the title over 38 games. I do think we can achieve European football and a cup in the next few years though which would be a massive achievement. Whatever happens it’s just great to see us playing exciting football again

N’Lundulu looks tasty but he isn’t superhuman Dirk. Not even the best in the world can just muscle their way through compact defences. Ings wasn’t firing on all cylinders but was still taking up good positions and is still our best striker by far. I look forward to seeing more of N’Lundulu over the Christmas period though

On this day 2 years ago, we beat Arsenal 3-2 when Austin came on as a sub for Ings, who'd already scored twice, and scored a late winner. N’Lundulu would have been today's equivalent: someone who'd bully defenders and rattle them a bit.

Just goes to show how far we have come of late that we're all so down at 22 points lost. Mind, felt the same last year after their 95th minute equaliser or whenever it was

| Arsenal Game Matchday Thread on 22:51 - Dec 16 with 418 views | DorsetIan | tbh I think we would have lost this if they hadn't gone down to 10. They were improving and we seemed to relax as soon as we'd scored. I sometimes think that having Djenepo on is like playing with 10 men, so I was pretty dismayed to see him coming on as soon as they got the red - as if we wanted to even it up a bit! But to be fair to him, he was OK. In and around the box he's is a completely different player to anywhere else on the park. It's like he comes to life when he's in sight of goal and there's not too much to think about. I thought Redmond was out best player when he was on. Also think that not winning this will give us a bit of a kick up for Saturday. | |

Bottom line - this. Saints would never win so many on the trot. So a draw means I personally fancy this team getting a result against Man City. Madness.
