I would expect the likes of Shilton, Osgood and Ball to come into the reckoning from before that time.

Peter Osgood was loved by Saints fans including me, however I can't say he would be classed as one of our best signings, we paid top dollar in 1974 for him, but he didn't score until the final day of the season.
The following season we were awful and McMenemy couldn't walk to the dug out without much abuse as the team badly misfired.
The 76 cup run launched him to god like status, if we hadnt won it I think the history of Saints would have been much changed |  |
