He was short in stature, not very agile with poor positional sense.

Never heard of him but he sounds classic Saints, so I looked him up - all five foot nine inches of him. Maybe you're a bit unfair on him. He played 141 games for Saints, so probably had a few decent days in there somewhere. You remember him from his last season when he was the reserve but stepped into the team when big money signing John Hollowbread had a career ending injury. | | | |

This will not have filled the defence with confidence.

What makes McCarthy worse is, to put it politely, his lack of bravery. He's the only goalkeeper I've ever seen who's afraid of the ball hitting him, which is why he literally bends backwards to let close range shots into the net at his near post. He also used to retreat into the net, a yard behind his goal line, when he saw a forward about to unleash a powerful shot.
Reading had a hell of a job getting rid of him because whoever they loaned him to sent him back asap. I think he found his level at Yeovil: non-league.
