| What’s the purpose of the B B C nowadays? 13:39 - Mar 31 with 4232 views | saintmark1976 | Two days running the first item on their T V lunch time news has been about Scott Mills, someone I’ve never ever heard of. Turns out he’s a radio presenter possibly mixed up in some questionable antics years ago. It’s the same with their football coverage, endless articles about Manchester Utd or others attempting to get various managers the sack. The B B C used to be the go to Broadcaster for proper National and International news. And to think that we have to pay to have a license to see and listen to their puerile dribble. Allegedly, he has done things similar to Epstein, Mandelson, Schofield and many others who wern't with the BBC. | |

The television that they produce/have produced is in the main good, I also like their coverage of what sport they have left and will always prefer the BBC to ITV. The politics one is interesting, they are all over Starmer (quite rightly) but give far too much coverage to Reform and from what I can see never scrutinize or challenge them. And Scott Mills is 100% Saints too, by all accounts. [Post edited 31 Mar 16:50]

| What’s the purpose of the B B C nowadays? on 16:49 - Mar 31 with 3202 views | franniesTache | Having spent time in other countries i tend to the side that says it's a lot better than we realise. Yes there are undeniable issues with it, and seemingly there was a deeply dark culture of abusers inside the organisation in the 70's (though to be honest that was largely true of society at large in that era, don't forget the myriad stories of groupies and bands who were effectively nonces). But that said if you separate the news from the BBC it's output is incredible. TV shows like small prophets recentely couldn't have been made anywhere else but the Beeb, you have cricket coverage on the radio with TMS that is second to non, local news coverage, educational programmes for kids, documentaries like Once Upon A Time in Iraq that are genuinely the best in class, music coverage on places like Six Music or live TV like Glastonbury, hugely popular comedy (which i don't like but others do) like Mrs Brown's Boys or Gavin and Stacey, that sits alongside brilliant niche comedy like Alan Partridge or The Detectorists. Then add in science coverage like the exceptional series by Jim Al-Khalili on quantum physics or his recent series on the brain, or nature documentaries like attenborough's and i honestly don't think any other company in the world gets close. Does that mean we shouldn't challenge their mistakes or expect them to be better? No of course not. But a world without the BBC is a worse world, and the licence fee is a tiny cost for not just good quality broadcasting, but also for the soft power it gives our country in the rest of the world (the world service is a vital tool to how we are viewed and our influence). There is a reason that the people who attack it the most are those that would be classed as our enemies, from Russian interference, to American billionaires and Middle Eastern oligrachs, they hate the BBC because they can't control it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He is but we don't really want to be associated with the reason for his sacking, albeit there was apparently not enough evidence to take it any further My only comment (haven't read above posts yet soapols if I'm treading on other 's toes), is why has it only come to light now for an incident that happened in 2018! That seems to be the issue here it's been hidden under the carpet

Just think about who was the original presenter on HIGNFY and what happened to him and the reason for hissacking Great shame as the programme was good in his day, and still is. And they do seem to have digs at the current incumbant of No.10 as much as all previous incumbants so one could say there is no real political bias there?

Until it learns how to be impartial, which means questioning and accepting the opinions of people who have opposing views they will fail. It’s been obvious for years that opinions from the political left are accepted without question and those from the right are shouted down. That's why all the lefties on here are so for it. And as the new boss Brittin is on the Guardian's board and worked for the Mirror, nothing is going to change. The Beeb does make the odd great programme, Small Prophets, Wolf Hall and Attenborough's doc's but also endless mediocre cop series, naf comedies, that are totally forgettable. Do young people watch the BBC? It's the last thing they look at, when they've got all the sreamers, tiktok, youtube etc a whole generation don't go near it, and most people over 50 think it's a woke propaganda machine. So why are we forced to pay for it?

It's interesting you say this, and it is said a lot that they are impartial but question time for example, they do allow right wing politicians onto the panel, and they are given a fair amount of time to speak? Fiona Bruce also questions and challenges politicians on the left, as I have seen it. Yes things like Eastenders, MOTD, etc have gone "woke" but so has Sky and ITV hasn't it? I can understand though that in today's world, you shouldn't have to pay for it if you never watch the BBC. They could just have adverts and scrap the fees or leave people the option to pay if they want to. I am not bothered, as there are lots of things I watch on BBC and listen to Radio Solent. Exactly, if you don't watch it you shouldn't have to pay for it. I like radio solent too, but there a lot the BBC could axe like the endless podcasts for instance. As for bias, before the last election the BBC news had a story about food banks every night, night after night, after night for years....Labour get in, flatline the economy and the cost of living crisis gets even more chronic, but not a word about food banks on the news. So the conclusion is the BBC is giving Labour an easy ride. It's so obvious it's laughable.

Tend to agree with that view. Licence Fee is approximately 50p per day I believe...anyone who thinks that is a rip off needs to take a serious look around themselves because, let me assure you, there are many shysters ripping you off for a damn sight more than that every day of every week. What the Beeb does need to do is sharpen up its HR and Governance systems to prevent people like Mills getting paid 350k a year to (allegedly) fiddle with young fellows. Smashie and Nicie would be mortified.

yes, but if you don't use it then 50p a day is too much. Who wants to pay another tax? Who wants to support an organisation that has such an horrendous record of housing and covering up pe*o activity. I don't watch the BBC or pay a TV license and I can tell you where a lot of your license fee goes - I have receive endless letters for years with various levels of threat against me for legitimately not paying - this must cost them a fortune plus the invisible staff they pay to check on non-payers like me! They have tried every trick in the book to get me to pay for a service I don't use. I find it laughable if a little bit despicable.

So you use no BBC products? You don't watch a single BBC program? Even on platforms that are not the BBC? And you don't listen to the radio? And you don't visit the BBC website? I'm intrigued as i don't know if i'd even be able to avoid it completely

Maybe it's worth £180/year to stop them pestering you....only kidding . Do you have to warrant on some form that you do not use their service ? Anyway, as an old options trader. I think a 50p per day call on the entire BBC output looks like a value trade. That said, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

Over the top chatter about City or United is probably down to the sports dept now being based in BBC Salford. Many parts of the media have changed wholesale since the internet and now social media. The quality has gone downwards and now americans own Sky i suspect that will get bad as well. The BBC has sunk forever now due to its political bias and left wing propaganda. Ironically, if you don't pay your TV licence fee, you can go to jail... and spend all day long just sitting there... watching TV.
