One of the reasons for our demise has been the lack of passion shown at home. The place is not home fan friendly ,if the club doesn’t do something about it I can’t see us improving. I know I keep on about this but the support is disintegrating.

What do you suggest ?

If we had a winning mentality on the pitch and actually won more than 2 league games at home, instead of this ever failing 'don't lose' policy, it may increase fan morale.

Most people have know we are down for months and those that still go are just going through the motions for the remaining games as they have Season Tickets and feel obliged to go, so is it any wonder there is no passion.

NB - of course that will all change for the Liverpool game, where hordes of away fans will be welcomed by SFC to all areas of the St Marys Stadium with open arms and it will be a real w@nkfest of a (Liverpool) footballing atmosphere !! :-)

At the Dell the mindset was we're at home so we are going to have a go at you.
At St. Marys we often as not give too much respect to the visitors on and off the pitch.

Not sure I understand. We always stand close to the away fans because that's where the best atmosphere is for the home fans. What would moving the away fans do to help? Where would you move them to?

So we can’t create an atmosphere unless we stand close to the away fans?

There is a valid argument that moving the away fans to the Northam and Itchen corner would help the atmosphere as we would almost have a whole end of home fans in the Northam and those fans would still be next to the away fans. But the issue is that's where the ticket office is so there isn't a concourse underneath.

However, it's about the team on the pitch. When we had Mane, VD, Tadic etc, we won games because we had a good team simple as that. There were still hordes of away fans behind the goal, but it didn't matter, we had a really good team.

The fans are long suffering, the performances have been terrible and the fans are embarrassed by results like losing to Grimsby, 9 nil record defeats and so on. There are away fans all around the ground because the tourists will pay £89 for a ticket to see Liverpool and Man City and the stewards let them in. The fans have had enough, they have lost their passion and I don't blame them.

We have one slow turgid song and we sing come on you reds away from home when our opponents are wearing red and we don't have an ounce of red on our kit.
What we need is a bunch of flag waving Palace style Ultras to come up with new chants and create an atmosphere.
Numbers wise we are quite good but the quality of support is rubbish.

Don't you get bored dribbling on about the same old pony?

The reason we're bottom of the league is we've only got a handful (generous) of PL quality players, if we'd have played 17 home games without any away fans we still probably wouldn't have won more than 2. What are you struggling with?

Leeds (probably the noisiest PL supporters), Everton and Leicester all put away fans on the side of the ground, they've won 14 home games between them all season out of 52 and 2 of those 3 will go down with us.
Done them the world of good? Eh

And away fans a normally quite right with the classic "you're support is fkn sh1t!"

It does pick up once we score, when the players need supporting (when conceding), there's little vocal support but that I think is primarily because we are (have been this season) sh1t and we've all had enough which really is a downer

The other true classic against us is "you've only got one song" but also a couple of anti Pompey songs

Don't know the answer other than a positive start to 23/24 with a few wins, but that will only happen with some decent new players who want to play for us. Also do what we can to keep KWP, JWP, Perraux, Lavia, Salamuna etc. Oh well ..................

I don’t think that is the case at all. The fans cannot carry the team for 90 minutes, game after game. Why should they get excited when served up bowls of cold gruel week after week, knowing that if we score, then we will soon concede 2?

Everton and Leeds have won 3 more games at home than us,if we had done that we would have been out of the relegation zone.
The reason we're bottom of the league is that we have been managed by two of the worst managers in Saints history.
Cant wait for your next supercilious comment.

All the old arguments are coming out again, once again we are the victims, the home support would be brilliant overnight if it wasn't for the fact that we give the away fans half the Northam.

The fact of the matter is there is no winning formula to have great home support, all of the fans who are known for it do it in different types and sizes of stadium and with the away fans in various parts of the ground.

We as a fanbase sit back and always have a good reason why we are not loud & proud, there is always an excuse.

But the stark truth is that we just don't have enough people who are willing to make any noise, anyone who went to Forest on Monday would have been impressed, they have had 25 years of mediocrity, yet they were still up for it, yes they are newly promoted, but was St Mary's like that back in 2012 when we got promoted ?

It is not the lay out of a stadium or being next to away fans that create an atmosphere, it is down to the people in the stadium themselves.

Instead of whinging about away fans in the Northam we should get on with doing things we can change not moan about something we can't.

The Chapel could have been and still could be the vocal home end everyone craves.
The fact is our fans CHOSE/CHOOSE to be next the away fans for whatever reason that might be.
If we do partake in safe standing perhaps we could install it in the chapel to see if that entices fans to that area to create an atmosphere.
I don't think the club are moving away fans anytime soon so its that or continue as we are.

Forest had a brilliant 2022
From the bottom of The Championship to The Premier League.
With a good manager and some decent buys.
The feel good factor is with the club.

Quite the opposite to Southampton FC. 2022 and 2023 have been awful.
This relegation has been coming for some time.

I’m sure next season if Forest stay up and are in our shite position playing shite football the crowd may turn somewhat.

I’m amazed St Mary’s is as full as it is still.

Re the moving of away fans, this discussion has been going on on here for years and it just isn't going to happen, mainly for logistical reasons such as policing, segregation (inside and outside the stadium), getting away fans back to their coaches etc etc.
Not sure what the regulations are for safe standing in the Championship but if allowed I can't see it happening in the Chapel as that is primarily where the "family" centre is and the club would want to keep that as it is.
If it was brought in it would make sense to make it Northam / Northam/Kingsland corner or thereabouts
As Saintwiz has just said, Forest are getting that atmosphere as they've had an incredible couple of years and there is a great feelgood feel about the place. We've had a sh1t couple of years and we are just not a vocal club

St.Mary’s on 12:10 - May 10 with 3383 viewsBar_Brother

The atmosphere is poor- yes the team are absolutely crap but that's not the only reason. I would love to move the away fans but that is never going to happen.
The championship is a chance to re-establish a vocal home backing. The club need to work with the fans and come up with an agreed area for all the singers to congregate.
I think there are only 2 viable options-
1/ In the Itchen next to the away fans ( would look good on TV and would help drown out the away fans)
2/ The Chapel End (creating a Kop like atmosphere) could be really good if the whole central area was 500 plus singers - would help the team more as they tend to kick that way in the 2nd half
One of the problems with the Northam is that you cannot really see the fans on any TV overage which makes us look even worse than we are-
Any move of singers means some current fans who sit in these areas and are season ticket holders would need to be shifted elsewhere- now we are relegated this should be a bit easier.
Finally our variety of songs is shocking- we need a few more stirring anthems which the whole ground can join in with- if Forest can do it so can we!

I'd rather shit in my own hands and clap than have "ultras" at St Mary's, f*cking god awful fancy dress crap that should stay in Europe.

Even when it's done "well" in this country - like at Celtic or Rangers - it's still sh*t. No response to the game, no humour, just noise for the sake of noise.

And can you imagine how tinpot it would be if it was our fans doing it, would end up looking more like those freaks down the road with their bandstand than Italian ultras.

What we need is to get back to our own football culture, we had some of it returning pre-covid in the Itchen North but that got completely over run and infested by children that had watched Green Street and ruined, and now it's just the Northam in smaller numbers.

You miss the point Wiz, Forest had a brilliant 2022, we had a brilliant two seasons between 2010/11 & 2011/12, we had a manager that was loved, players that were loved and a feel good factor with the club.

Was St Mary's the seething cauldron that the City Ground was on Monday night ?

You were there, you know the answer to that one.

You could say that Everton have had a worse time in the last couple of years and have a lot more to gripe about than us given their expectations of their team, but their fans have stepped up to the plate and got behind the team, even though they are still raging against those who are in charge of their club, they are able to separate both apart.

before im accused of a Scouse thing Leicester fans who again could be said to have more to complain about than us of late, turn out week in week out fill their stadium and stay behind their team.

I speak to fans of all other clubs and when i speak about it they ask " what are your fans doing about it?" when I tell them absolutely zero except from boasting about leaving 30 minutes early and not buying season tickets next year on social media and ,message boards, they are incredulous.

The real reason for our decline is a lack of the all important PASHUN from the fans at SMS.
