| The atmosphere (or lack of it) 00:11 - Mar 19 with 7150 views | Southamptonfan | The atmosphere for such a big game was utterly abysmal. Sorry, and it pains me to say it but it was terrible. Our fans at Fulham were incredible, so loud, so proud, it was brilliant and proud day for this club. But some of the St Mary's atmospheres have been so poor. So many left from about the 80th minute and I can't believe so many can go home when such an important game is in the balance. So many in the ground just sit there in silence. Are they depressed and tired like most of this nation? Miserable that they have work in the morning? Not bothered or just shy? It's just so quiet and empty. The moving of the away fans has not helped, but the empty seats everwhere, and those who do turn up just don't seem bothered. Very disappointing. I bet there is a sell out for Arsenal at 8pm on a Saturday night. A lot of snobish fans, who turn up because it's Arsenal and a quarter final? We have some passionate fans, you see that at away games. But a big game under the lights, many don't turn up and those who do sit there in silence. What's going on? I remember some crackling atmospheres under the lights, Hoiveldt scoring the winner in a sell out crowd against West Ham in the Championship, that Friday night game against Reading in the championship that we lost but they were crackling atmospheres and sell out crowds. Why is it so quiet and empty, especially evening games? [Post edited 19 Mar 0:14]

Loving it in there. That said, I could hear a fair bit of noise coming from the Northam in the second-half.

I agree about the Northam. Sitting at the back of the Chapel it was the first time I’d really noticed a ‘wall’ of noise coming from there. And I didn’t mind the quiet in the first half. We were playing a very slow and cagey game, successfully blunting Norwich’s fast, attacking style under Clement. A few times when Peretz had the ball in the box, he just stood there with it and I loved that because it frustrated Norwich’s desire to get the ball and attack. When you’re playing cagey like that it’s incongruent for the crowd to be going bananas. The silence matched the careful mood on the pitch. In the second half when we were more under the cosh and fending off more attacks, the noise levels rose - especially when peretz was pulling of his saves. By the end I thought the atmosphere was fantastic.

| The atmosphere (or lack of it) on 10:20 - Mar 19 with 4741 views | SouthSeaSaint | I think last season, in particular, drained a lot of enthusiasm from the home fans. Also if you look at the age profile of our supporters, both home and away, there are quite a lot of older and female fans. This is the profile of fans near where I sit and the majority sit in silence but I guess the good thing is we do turn up.. | | | |
| The atmosphere (or lack of it) on 10:46 - Mar 19 with 4696 views | dirk_doone | Quite honestly, more noise would have just increased the pressure and nerves for a team trying to hang on to a 1-0 lead, and probably spurred Norwich on more. Look at the effect Pompey fans' noise has on their team. They've lost their last 4 home games, recently went 7 months without a home win and they have one of the worst all-time home records in the country. Our home record was very good during the Covid lockout and our all-time home record is much better than Pompey's. Most of the singing that takes place is more for the fans to amuse themselves than to help the team in any way. When I watch football on TV, I have no idea which set of fans is singing, "Your support is f---ing sh!t" and I don't expect the players do either. Research showed that the main effect home fans' noise (not singing) had was on influencing referees' decisions, over things like penalties, red cards etc. With VAR, that influence has been much reduced. The influence of away fans on referees at St Mary's has also been reduced since they were moved into a corner, although they still have an influence on decisions in that corner. As for noise levels, I think that the building materials used in most modern stadiums are designed to absorb and reduce noise because planning permission would involve concerns over noise pollution to the local area. That's why the noise doesn't carry as far. Old stadiums were built without any need for this and so always sound louder. I sat on the halfway line for the Leicester cup game, not where I normally sit, and was surprised how loud the Northam's singing was. But, in some other parts of the ground, the noise doesn't carry, as the building materials have been designed to prevent it carrying that far. This would explain why DorsetIan, sitting in one part of the stadium thought the noise was fantastic, while Southamptonfan, sitting in another location, thought it was abysmal. The acoustics in the stadium are rubbish . I’ve sat in every stand as I’ve said many times and the noise really doesn’t travel that well . Yes some of our fans look like they’re attending a morgue but many HOME fans around the country are exactly the same, it’s usually the away fans making the noise because away fans in general are made up of mainly males who are basically tanked up and are all grouped together not spread out like home fans . I would have thought this was fairly obvious . This subject comes up time and time again . 🙄 | |

As Dirk Doone points out , the lot down the road who are renoun for generating alot of noise have been rewarded with a load of defeats. I like to sing and shout encouragement and I do find it strange that lots of fans just prefer to sit in silence...but thats their choice and I certainly wouldn't be having a go at them for that.

| The atmosphere (or lack of it) on 17:47 - Mar 19 by grumpy | The atmosphere at St Marys is no worse and no better than most grounds. The Pompey game I saw some on tv with that constant banging on drums and that silly bell ringing all the time would drive me nuts. Stamford Bridge is a different place than I remember. What is different now than in the past is that a lot of grounds are all seater and subsequently the cost is more. There's a different crowd at football these days, far more civilized [Post edited 19 Mar 17:49]

Well yes that's true about all seaters, cost etc but I can't understand thousands of people walking out in the 80th minute in a huge game when we are one nil up. How must that look to the players, half the ground leaving, when the game is in the balance? It may be the same at other grounds, and people sitting there in silence maybe more civilised but I don't like it personally. I also find it slightly irritating that there will be a full house without a doubt to probably watch us get beat by Arsenal but loads of empty seats for our bread and butter in a big game, very important. I was there, I sang for the team, stayed to the end, made a sacrifice but others just sat there in silence. I find that all disappointing, maybe others arn't bothered but I would rather a sell out crowd, roaring the team on. The Dell was almost always like that, but St Mary's at times, yes probably like a lot of grounds nowadays, is often just silent. Understand it when the team is not giving anything back, but we are playing ever so well and it's just my opinion, but they don't deserve half the ground leaving before the end. Nick has alluded to it and many others on social media and at the ground are saying how quiet it is. Some.individuals start up songs and the people around them just look miserable and don't join in. That's their choice but surely we all want the whole stadium roaring on the team? [Post edited 19 Mar 18:52]

You talk a lot of sense fella, but could you please use paragraphs as its a bit of a struggle to read, but since we made the daft decision to move the away fans to the corner, where the Saints fans next to them are generally old, quiet, half asleep, or oddball dribblers like that Dawson knob doing hat stupid dance and making an tit of himself (what must the away fans think?) The atmosphere and the team have got worse and got relegated. Well done BECAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
| The atmosphere (or lack of it) on 20:34 - Mar 19 with 4114 views | saintmark1976 | What surprised me yesterday evening was how late a large number of people were in taking their seats at the start of the game let alone how many left with 15 minutes still to play. Add in the fact that a considerable number left their seats ten minutes before half time and it makes me wonder why they bother to make the effort to turn at all. Hopefully the atmosphere will improve on Saturday. | |

If we are relying to be next to the away fans to create an atmosphere we do have a problem.

We can debate the move of away fans etc to death but the bigger issue is the lack of energy from around the whole ground. Bad tackles, refereeing decisions etc barely create more than a grumble where I am in The Kingsland. So many fans who spend a fortune on the latest kit/merchandise etc and yet sit in silence as soon as they enter the ground. Last night the crowd should’ve been helping the team over the line when we had people leaving in their droves and a match winning save leads to nothing more than a polite ripple of applause behind the goal. For all the decrying of St Mary’s, there’s no doubt that in the early years the atmosphere around the whole ground was far better than it is now. Matches traditionally under the lights used to be the best but it seems like it’s a chore for some. Crowds make atmospheres not grounds and we just don’t have enough fans who bring emotion into St Mary’s.

It's the older demographic that's changed things, in the 70s, 80s and 90s the crowd was mainly young lads with a lot of pent-up energy, there were always older fans but not in the numbers you see today. Even when you look at our away supporters there's a large number of 'old guys and older women, I'm not getting at them, they are loyal fans, but they don't make as much noise. In the old days you'd rarely see a woman in the away support especially as there was always a chance of a bit of bovver. Ive always been vocal at games, its a great way to let off steam, and it really frustrating when a lot of the crowd around me are so quiet. The Chapel is the worst, it's a proper elephants graveyard.

I’m one of the older guys who is vocal and it frustrates me when others are quiet. I get funny looks in the Itchen north sometimes when I chant but do I care ? Of course not . You are what you are, I don’t let it bother me too much. One thing I will say is if you went on other fans boards as I sometimes do youll find their fans moaning about their home atmospheres too.

Don’t think it’s just the oldies not making a noise, I’ve been to many away game and been next to youngsters and thought why are they so quiet? the younger fans are too busy on there phones to make a noise. Football clubs should ban the use of phones during matches, concerts are going that way as people spent the whole time filming. You can’t clap with a phone in your hand.

Have to say the Oxford support were very vocal to begin with, they even sang our song, but the singing abated when the first goal went in on 6 minutes, when the second went in they went very quiet. And they got a lot of ridicule from our lot. I couldn't hear the Northam at all from there.

It's very strange because the Northam were much louder today, sitting in the Kingsland singing about Eckert, they also asked him to give us a wave and he did, so Tonda could hear them. I could clearly hear the Oxford support from the other end and at times the Northam seemed loud but you can't hear them at the other end?
