I was thinking that, Dirk. The ref really let the game flow.

We should be fine against Brighton as Forster will be back in goal and that boosts the confidence of the whole team. I know there are some mitigating factors but these stats certainly show what a massive difference Forster makes: McCarthy has let in 23 goals in his last 6 games Forster has let in 1 goal in his last 6 games

I thought we were worth a draw at half time. Gave away soft goals again. Forster needs to start every remaining game. Strange team selection. If Ralph had given up before the start, why not play Ramsay at RB? City went easy on us but at least it wasn’t a one sided spanking, just a two sided spanking.
| Saints At Manchester City Matchday Thread on 20:14 - Mar 10 with 988 views | kingslandstand1 | To see how well we did tonight against City, it will be interesting to see how Fulham get on against them as that will also potentially take them out of the relegation battle as they will have the momentum none of the other bottom 7 (inc us) have got | |

Love your analysis Dirrk but there was a well considered one on the TV commentary. McCarhty - Distrubution Forster - Shot stopper. Would you consider horses for courses , ie 2 keepers or do you need a main keeper ? Its interesting and I would like your positive thoughts on McCarthy , Forster scared me from my season ticket view last time he played before heading off to Celtic , but I agree hes better keeper now. I re-iterate ........ GOAL !!!!!! we scored.

Enjoyed it far more than I expected, don’t mind losing if we gave it go throughout, just a shame we effectively gave the game away just before half time.

Ralph must have seen how poor McCarthy was tonight but it was a chance for him to prove himself with another chance really. But I think playing Betrand at RB was a good move as it definitely fooled them to start with Just a shame we gave them 3 of their goals And surely he must do something about playing out from the back ALL of the time!

Ultimately, football is a team game and I look at the scorelines when a goalkeeper plays. I've looked at the career stats for Forster and McCarthy and whether it's for their whole careers, their Saints careers only or their Premier League careers only, the results and the goals conceded per game for Forster are miles better. The difference is quite stark. It's not even close. Whether you like him or not, the stats show that Forster stops goals. He has nearly 200 clean sheets. McCarthy reminds me of an old Saints keeper called Dave MacLaren, who also flattered to deceive. He always appeared to be making spectacular dives, which on first impression looked impressive, but when you analysed them you saw that he was always setting off for them a fraction of a second too late, without much conviction that he was actually going to reach the ball and so, in spite of appearing acrobatic, he let in lots of goals. As for distribution, the percentage of kicks from Forster that go to his own team is far higher than that for McCarthy. [Post edited 10 Mar 2021 20:42]

No it wasn't. He was clearly looking at Saturday's game FF as well as KWP will be back, and I'd like to think Minamino instead of Redmond although that is probably unlikely. Stephens will also be back on the bench

But did FF need to sit it out? Really I get diallo KWP resting for the weekend but the keeper?

Soft penalty to you but it was a pen, not quite as blatant on the one on Foden tho haha! Definitely a lot of positives for Saints after that, I thought you attacked quite well and caused us plenty of problems. Good luck for the rest of the season!

Foden deserves credit for trying to play on when he was fouled in the area, would have seen AM with yellow, maybe red card. Pep wouldn't have been pleased if they'd have dropped points, may tell him not to be so honest in future.

Our next 3 games define our season. 2 very winnable home league games and a great chance to progress to the Semis in the FA Cup. There will be recalls for FF, KWP, Diallo, Minamino and Tella. Armstrong got a bit of a rest Hopefully Djenepo is not injured ( but suspect he will be) Make or break time and hopefully RH will employ team and tactics to justify his selections tonight.

That's the impression I had too, but not strictly true. The completion rates for short — medium — long passes in 20/21 (all competitions) are: FF: 100.0% — 87.5% — 34.1% AM: 99.3% — 98.7% — 34.5% FF attempts a much higher proportion of long passes (over 30 yds) than AM. https://fbref.com/en/stathead/

I enjoyed it too, once the personnel change took place, we were playing decent football without the glaring holes that allowed them to keep stretching us.
