Still remember the day he signed, people walking down the street singing Keegan, Keegan!! Most strange me thinks! (no internet in those days) Get to the city centre, Echo sellers - Read all about it Late Special Edition, Met him many times always had time to talk
The day he signed for us has always lived long in the memory. The footballing world was stunned. How could little provincial Southampton do this? It was the start of a revolution at the club and Big Lawrie had alot to do with it. I was then fortunate to see Keegan play week in and week out. He always seemed a decent guy too, though he often wore his heart on his sleeve.

I can remember my older brother telling me Saints had signed KK and I didn't believe him, I was about 7 at the time Sadly I never saw him play for Saints but it gave an me an immense sense of pride wearing my Patrick/Rank Zerox kit for PE at school, who do you think you are? Kevin Keegan? the PE teacher would ask
Maybe my memory is all a bit foggy but I seem to recall the signing of Kevin Keegan being a massive surprise. I don’t recall any rumours it was just announced by a beaming Lawrie at a press conference. Anyway he was at the forefront of the best Saints side I’ve ever seen. RIP. A truly great player.

How the world has changed. I can't imagine a similar top player today choosing a club like SFC over Real Madrid and Europe's elite.
I watched him as a player and met him when he was a manager. He did everything in a very honest and committed way. Genuine, I think you'd call him. A genuine legend.
I was walking home from school and our next door neighbour shouted over the hedge "We've signed Kevin Keegan!". It was hard to take in - I guess the equivalent nowadays would be announcing the signing of Harry Kane. Keegan's influence was massive, both on and off the pitch, especially his sponsorship deal with Patrick which saw the club adopt them as their kit supplier and everyone started wearing Patrick boots. The excitement and hype in the build up to Keegan's first match at The Dell is difficult to describe... sleepy Southampton suddenly became the focus of the football world's press. It was an incredible couple of years, the only regret is that he left just as Shilton was arriving. With those two in the team I genuinely believe we might have won the league.

it was such a secret that other Saints players at signing announcement eg Bally and Steve Williams etc. knew nothing about it

I also heard that Mick Channon, being a close mate of Keegan, also had a say in getting him here. That day must rank in one of the highlights in our history. Class and a gentleman

I was a little kid on the east stand benches and was sat directly behind that. Being so low to the pitch it seemed Keegan jumped ten feet in the air and somehow managed to get his footy on the ball and ping it into the top corner. It was extraordinary and I was gutted when they disallowed it. I probably remember it as better than it was but I'm happy with that.
I met him once in La Lupas, really nice guy, had a chat about Saints after his meal - think that must've been 1992 or 1993. Never saw him play, but knew all about him obviously.
