Where have all the young guns gone? 18:19 - Oct 19 with 1278 viewstemplarinexile

Garteh Bale, Theo Walcott, Luke Shaw, JWP and Danny Wallace were just 16 when they made their Saints debut. - MLT, Mick Channon, and Steve Williams were 17.

There may be many others through the history books, but what has happened to our "famed" academy recently?
Apart from Dibling and Robinson - neither of whom have lasted very long - what other youngsters have come through the ranks in the last few years and established themselves in the first teamt? (I'm not counting Cameron Bragg as he is not yet quite a fixture).

The current lack of alternatives to cover for Larin emphasises this dearth of homegrown talent - or at least confirms the fact that that our manager(s) have little faith in our academy players, despite that some of them seem to be performing well and scoring regularly.

Exactly why we have brought in the likes of the Man City kid and won't play him, and that people like Ballard were never given an opportunity , is a complete mystery.

I can't see that this is an area that SR would be involved in directing operations as it can't be a financial issue.

Remember Jay Robinson? He's playing in Serie A now and he scored again today:

From what I can tell Bournemouth are scooping up all the best kids these days. My son plays for 2 very good teams and they have lost 2 players to Bournemouth and I know of 3 more players from Basingstoke that have gone to Bournemouth.

Some good news though 2 of his team mates are now on trial at Saints and they do seem to be more active this season with scouts at most of our matches . Imagine 10/15 years ago Bournemouth having the pick of the crop. Poxy little club.

My understanding is that he’s out on loan. I think he’s a fantastic prospect and very much hope he comes back.

Can we cancel his loan, he'd be better up front than Dobbin or Mubama.

Dobbin is proven at Championship level, the issue is that Mubama isn't working and he is a centre forward in the style that Tonda wants to play, Jay Robinson certainly isn't nor is Dobbin

Agreed, we need a centre forward and Robinson is a winger. If he came back he'd be competing for a place with our other wingers.

But we still haven't solved the no 10 position. As you've said Azaz is great but we haven't got a deputy. Dobbin was supposed to be it but I'm not convinced. I've always rated Robinson and I think he has the ability to play as a no 10 if he's given time to adapt.

On Dobbin, he looks like a second striker and nothing else. That's fine, but we hardly ever play a second striker out of choice, and he needs a centre forward to play off. I'm not convinced that was money well spent when we could have just kept Archer who would have done much the same.

The whole academy thing is a bit of a farce nowadays, any really good prospect is signed by a bigger club, like Morgan going to Chelsea or Alleyne going to Man City. Having said that we did the same when we brought Walcott in from Swindon and Lallana from Bournemouth

Back in time we had the centre of excellence in Bath, one in London run by he he won’t be named and in the North East which produced many of our great players, times change and I would imagine budgets cut as were not at the top table anymore

Fail we may, sail we must

It wasn't budget cuts. We closed the academy in Bath because we were forced to. The regulations say we can only have academies within a certain distance. We originally had an exemption because half our catchment area is in the sea. But I don't understand why we're prevented from having an academy in Bath but youngsters are allowed to be uprooted and sent hundreds of miles to Man City or wherever. The regulations were supposed to be about protecting youngsters, so how does that work?

This is really going back to the past and showing my age, but does talent spotting or scouting exist any more? I am sure (certainly under Bates and McMenemy) we picked up a few gems from scouting? (now you are going to ask Who, and I can't remember)....lol.

Its a nonsense
I used to live in Farncombe, 5 miles south of Guildford and the football club is affiliated with Chelsea, it says it on the board outside.
I would imagine Portsmouth is the closest club to there, apart from Aldershot but who wants to play for those c***s?

Academies are supposed to be within 75 miles of the clubs, but the usual suspects for whom the rules do not apply, completely ignore this and when they do get pulled up for it, get a financial slap on the wrist, which is neither here nor there.

As you say, parents are bought houses miles away from where their kids come from, relocate them from their schools, the full hit, even kids in primary school. Its obscene.

When I worked in football, we even had clubs sending scouts to primary schools to approach kids as they left school. Now in any normal situations, once the school makes the complaint there would be all sorts of safeguarding red flags but nothing ever came from it.

As I say, the rules just dont apply to them.

Do you get into trouble if you turn up scouting with a camera?

We signed him from Weymouth, he was in his early 20’s and had made nearly 150 non-league appearances according to wiki
I’m probably wrong but memory tells me that he was the last player Lawrie Mac signed for us

Steve Moran for starters, I seem to remember he was scouted locally and McMenemy telling a story about giving him a new pair of boots as an ice breaker to introduce him to the idea of signing for Saints as a youngster.

And the incredibly tragic tale of Steve Mills - a great young full back who would have undoubtedly become an England regular, but suffered a career ending car crash at the age of 22 - and then died from Leukaemia in his 30s.

Small world. I used to live in Farncombe as well (Tudor Circle) - albeit a long time ago.

My first school was in Farncombe. Me and my older brother used to go to Saturday morning pictures in Godalming while mum n dad went supermarket shopping.

My dad was a submariner for 29-years and he transferred to the Austrailian navy for 3-years as he was a sonar expert so we all went to live on the outskirts of Sydney for those 3 years. I was only 5 at the time. My grandad became ill back home in England (he lived in Willow Road, Farncombe), so we upped sticks and moved back to England. The old bugger ended up living for another 16-years thankfully.

Indeed it is
We rented houses in Kings Road and Long Gore, then were in a position to buy, unfortunately it's become too expensive so we moved back to Haslemere
It's a really nice village, used to see David Howells in his flash Jag as he was briefly teaching at Charterhouse, he also ran the pub in Compton for a bit before it closed down
The church in the centre used to put on some really good gigs, saw The Icicle Works and Ian McNabb solo there, we bumped into Ian in the kebab house before the gig and his took rather a shine to Mrs S. Also saw Kiki Dee one Friday night when I was getting out Friday night takeaway
Would really like to move back there one day if we can
