So Lancs finally start against Kent at Canterbury, a game behind most of their rivals (except Yorkshire)

We're back to a post-Covid more traditional two-division setup with more red ball cricket being played mid-summer

No Jimmy Anderson in the line-up

Lancs 32-5 in reply to 391, the wheels have come off!

3-1 in the second innings almost 300 behind. A real pasting on the cards and I think only 2 bowling points. Any chance of rain for 2 days !!!

Glued to the Roses 20/20 at the moment.
Looking gloomy for Lancs though unless they take a quick wicket. Or two.

What a finish..snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat...thought after Vilas had missed the 2 catches Lancs were done for

Its almost as if Lancs have a surfeit of talent, with players such as Livingstone only able to get a game in the shorter formats at the moment. Meanwhile, Buttler continues in imperious form in the IPL

We've even got a youngster, Blatherwick, playing for a "First Class XI" against the tourists without having featured for Lancs (that i can remember?) this season

Yorks Harry Brooks looks a prospect too, and is mooted for a debut in the forthcoming test series. McCullum won't be short of talent to pick from, its a question of performing to their capabilities

Livingstone has been playing in the IPL or else he would have been in the Championship team. He had a good tournament finishing third behind Buttler and Russell in the MVP rankings.

For the select XI it was red ball players who wouldn't be playing in the Blast and by agreement with the counties.

From the sound of it a bad no ball decision, two dropped catches and not bowling Parkinson for four overs cost Lancashire the game. Brooks is a talent and in good form. It is probably between him and Bairstow for the five slot in the test team. If not he will probably make his debut in the white ball teams as any test players won't be available for selection.

True about Livingstone. Hope he can make some waves in the red ball game for Lancs, he'd be a great addition to the Test team if he can perform at that level, with his double-spin option and lower-order hitting

In the tourists game, a full strength NZ side were 19-6 in their second innings, with Essex lad Jamie Porter on his home ground with figures of 5-2-18-5 not doing himself any harm at all

Compton not doing himself any harm either. 56not out after 39 in the first innings on all on the back of 878 runs in 11 innings in the county championship

Got his ton

He's in great form, and certainly puts pressure on our current test openers to perform, or else

England have named a squad for the the first two NZ tests, which leaves the door open for the third. Not that i want Lees to fail, but he's spent a career being pretty average and McCullum needs to identify those who can take the team forward

Easy win for Lancs at Trent Bridge, after posting 178 they've skittled Notts for 91 in just 14.4 overs

Fantastic win. First T20 victory for Lancs at Trent Bridge since 2009. They better get those wins in before they lose four players to England duty.

Went to Trent Bridge last night, easy win for Lancs. Impressive bowling and fielding, along with some big hitters in the batting department.

As well as the old guard (Jimmy & Stuart), great start for Matty Potts

35-5

Edit: Make that 36-6, and a call-up for Parkinson with Leach injured

Odd way to make your debut. Shouldn't be much to do in this innings, but if England can not collapse too, he may get a day 3 or 4 pitch to do something. Would be gutting if he didn't get a bowl

How stupid of me to even suggest that we might not collapse, when will I ever learn !!! nice little 41-7 spell to put me right ( with an 8-5 spell within that)

I was reading, amidst the ticket pricing controversy, that there are plenty of seats still available for Sunday. This one might not reach teatime on Saturday at this rate.

Nicely set up at lunch. Good comeback today from England but pity about the wicket going down just before. No excuse at all for sloppy reckless shots with more than 2 days left. Proper test batting required so let's see what we get

What an innings by Root and his highest score in a fourth innings of a match. What a great ebb and flow to the test with two low scoring first innings, early New Zealand wickets, a great stand and then England mop up the tail. Never in doubt this morning with excellent batting.

Root & Foakes made it look a lot more straightforward this morning, but make no mistake, this will go down as a very hard fought victory, whose significance in terms of the new leadership remains to be seen, but can't argue with that for a start!

Superb, of course, on a personal level for Joe Root, freed from the shackles of captaincy. His first ton in the fourth innings of an 118 test match career, and bringing up the 10000 run mark bang on making the ton

Loads of room for improvement in every department, but pleased for Parkinson too with a test scalp and a couple of nice shots with the bat. He can go home, re-light the barbie and knock back a beer or two

In the end, it was probably the impetus that Stokes put into the innings when we stood a fair chance of caving in again, and of course Potts made a great start to his test career. Maybe we can look forward to the rest of the summer now and give India a proper game to level the delayed end to that series

I wonder if they will go into the next test with the attitude of not changing a winning team. It's still the same 2 or 3 players getting the runs & papering over the cracks in the top 6. Pleased for Foakes as he has shown the application the "better" batsmen haven't. He could have cemented a summer & possibly winter of keeping the gloves.

Pleased with the win but would still like to see Brook in for the next one before he loses batting form by carrying the drinks

A good point, and its decisions like these that will define the Stokes/McCullum era

I agree about Brooks - the issue that the leadership have set up for themselves is (unwisely imo) installing Pope at no.3 as a statement of intent, which they can hardly go back on early doors. It'd also be unfair to drop Jonny Bairstow after one test following his centuries in the Caribbean

As indicated earlier, there's wriggle room in having selected a squad for the first two games against NZ only. Lees must be under the greatest pressure, but Brooks isn't an opener; hopefully Compton maintains his form in county cricket: but we're now in a series of T20s

Another thought - the midmatch call-up of Parkinson looks towards the future of our spin department, so will Leach's headache make one for the selectors too?
