| Afcon final on 12:26 - Jan 19 with 1319 views | bosh67 | Just to cut the ref a little slack last night. There was a push on the Morocco lad for the goal that was ruled out. No worse than the nudge by Smyth for one of his headers. The ref blew immediately for the foul. Perhaps he should have waited for a VAR check but it was a pretty obvious push. On the penalty he's sent to VAR, obviously with the instruction to give the penalty. He buffeted and bashed by players even at the monitor. At no point do his linesmen or 4th official, or indeed anyone come onto the pitch to help him out. He's totally abandoned out there. He can't stop players walking off and he can't break up numerous scuffles on his own. So I have a lot of sympathy for him, although technically he could and possibly should have sent the Senegal keeper off for gamesmanship when they came back on, having already booked him. I think that may have started a riot through. So I have a lot of sympathy for the ref who was given no protection at all. As for the Panenka I genuinely thought for a moment that he'd done that deliberately and that it had been agreed to give the ball back to the Senegal team because it was a pretty weak penalty award (by VAR). Then I realised that it was one of the worst penalties ever taken. Put your foot through it boy. If the keeper saves it so be it but don't chip it into his arms. | |

| Afcon final on 12:18 - Jan 19 by TheChef | I found it very odd that after the penalty miss there was no strong reaction from either team - wouldn't be surprised if during/after all the hoo ha, Morocco agreed with Senegal that they would miss it on purpose. |
He deliberately missed the penalty that would have won his country the tournament in front of a full home stadium of their fans? Not a chance in hell that happened.

| And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

Well quite. Just very odd that none of the Senegal players celebrated the miss!

There’s a lot of context though. They wouldn’t have walked off had the exact same decision been given in the semi. The conduct of the Moroccan squad, authorities, security etc. has been pretty dreadful. Doesn’t totally excuse what Senegal did but it’s kind of unprecedented at least going back quite some time.

I've only seen one clip of the scenes with Senegal fans kicking up. It's a first for me....... I thought the same about Mendy, the Senegal keeper. Booked for gobbing off at the ref in the initial melee, he then got in Diaz’s face and prevented the penalty from being taken for a considerable amount of time, so second yellow should have been given. I don’t blame the ref for bottling it in that cauldron though.
| Afcon final on 16:26 - Jan 19 with 768 views | themodfather | dont watch afcon, only know what happened due to sports reports but for me if the team leave the pitch , without agreement of ref and due to a disputed penalty, and stay off pitch for 10+ mins, they should forfeit the match. weak ref and what rules do they follow? a pub league game would have been abandoned and game awarded to the team who stayed on pitch willing to finish. FIFA will investigate and deduct the guilty party many points, so unlucky QPR. | | | |

It frustrates the hell out of me when people do that bitch stutter step thing too. And while you're at it, put it in the top corner and don't just play the 50/50 odds of putting it low. Cowards. That goes double for Gavin Peacock, the absolute pussy.

Yes, I definitely empathise with them - in many ways it shows up how flawed VAR is. He blew up early for Senegal's goal but then because he doesn't blow up for the second incident, it gets scrutinised. Even then, you could argue that at every set piece there are similar tussles going on between defenders and attackers that don't result in anything, so it just seems random to focus on one challenge among hundreds that take place in a match. Football is imperfect; that's why it is so thrilling. You can't use VAR for everything that goes on, so why use it at all? [Post edited 19 Jan 17:22]

The reserve keeper Yehvaan Diouf found himself in a new footballing role - protector of the towel. He spent the whole game behind the goal fending off all and sundry even the Moroccan captain Hakimi got involved. At one point Diouff’s on the floor in the 6 yard box hanging on to the towel for dear life while being assaulted by four ball boys - this is while the game is in play up the other end. And the scene where he’s being chased by the ball-boys and a security guard around the touch line needs the Benny Hill theme played over it.

I've not followed it, so thought your post, and several above you, were a bit of a micky taker. But no, it happened! Given our display of the dark arts on Saturday at Stoke, and employment of all manner of technical staff in the Nourry era, surely the time has come for QPR to employ a, director of shithousery. So we can get ahead of the curve on this and not be playing catch-up all the time. Given

At the very least our ball boys and girls should be summoned immediately for instruction in the latest towel-snatching techniques.

On a similar note, after we scored at West Ham, Jmmy Dunne left the celebration and went way, way out of his way to drink out of the West Ham keeper's bottle (and maybe have a look to see if he had penalty notes on there?). I'm not sure what the thinking was, but I'd bet quite a bit that there was definitely some thinking behind it.

Great observation there Brian. I didn’t think it possible for Jimmy D. to go up in my estimation at the moment (thus far my player of the season) but I’m imagining him retrieving a bookie’s biro surreptitiously blu-tacked behind his right ear, putting a line thru all the instructions and writing in one word alongside each QPR players name …. Panenka! A cunning ruse that so nearly paid off.

I seem to remember Jimmy drinking from a keeper's bottle before at the Loft end and emptying it on the ground – was it a really hot day at the start of this season or last?

That is the one angle that hasn’t been shown yet to prove it. We did nick the Cardiff towels a few years ago at loftus rd,and they were thrown around in R block for a while.
