My mum is 102 and remembers Hampshire being referred to as The County of Southampton in her early years. Born in Southampton and lived there until she joined the WAAF in 1942 at the age of 18 then moved back there post-war. She remembers being taught the county name at school as The County of Southampton or as you rightly say Southamptonshire. It was changed back to Hampshire in 1959 - much to her disappointment as she hates Portsmouth with an absolute passion and like you would love to see them squirm having to live in Southsmptonshire.
