Swansea finished 10th which doesnt look good on paper, but they finished the season strongly and only missed out on the play offs by 3 points

They also had the 5th worst defence, with 3 of the other 4 teams to concede more all being relegated.

Teams do not get promoted with a poor defence.

Burnley conceded 35 goals, Sheffield United 39 goals and Luton 39 goals.

Swansea conceded 64; 6 more than Cardiff, who were 1 place above relegation.

He's very much a "don't know" isn't he? He hasn't been disastrous anywhere, but hasn't been brilliant either. He has been at two clubs with little to spend, who sold their best players, so 10th, and scoring lots of goals is arguably good. He has managed in the championship so has some experience, whereas Jones and Selles had no experience of management in the PL. He will no doubt be enthusiastic and full of energy. The Swansea fans seem to rate him highly, so although I have little faith in SR to make the right decisions, I will cautiously welcome him. He "could" be an excellent appointment. We don't know, but we might as well give him a chance.

Can you not think of anything positive to say ? We are considering the merits of his ability to take over at Saints, we arent considering what obstacles he had in his way at Swansea, the article states

"That Swansea finished just three points adrift of the play-offs in 2022/23 was nothing short of a minor-miracle; Martin thriving amidst the distraction of off-field issues, ownership problems and the departures of many a key player. "

Clearly the feeling in Swansea was he was doing a job in difficult circumstances, he has to be cut some slack.

Sean Dyche was Burnley manager for all but the last few weeks of Burnley's season when they were relegated from the premier League, but there was a big clamour for him to be given the job here.

I judge managers on the players they have to work with, having a bad squad doesnt mean you are a bad manager and vice versa.

Sunderland made the playoff semis, and despite Tony Mowbray being in charge, look like the League 1 side they were until recently. Nearly making the playoffs is no indicator of skill;, tactics or application.

I know you are trying to be positive, but I don’t think it is.

But in Saints' case, finishing with 25 points is a clear indicator of a lack of tactics, skill and motivation.

I too, was not overawed by the possession stuff and importance he places on it, especially if you look at the goals conceded.

The options are we go for an upcoming manager or a journey man that is just looking for a payday. Our options are limited.

However, now that we have been relegated, as the article in earlier thread mentions, it does give us a chance to rebuild and get expensive players off the books. For example, as much as I admired JWP. his dedication and his free kicks, I think it is time for change and the money will help. The same applies for KWP (great going forward but often found wanting in his defensive duties) and Adams (Loads of effort but no end product).

I am now in the camp, having had time to reflect, that this is an opportunity to rebuild (on/off field) and give Martin a chance.

Did Sean Dyche keep Everton up despite having no strikers to use in most of his time there this season?

And where were Everton when he took over?

I have positive things to say when they are merited.

Swansea's previous 2 finishes: 6th and 4th. Then Russell Martin arrived and took them down to 15th (Swansea's worst finish in the 2nd tier since 1984) and then they were struggling in the bottom half of the table for most of this season as well until a late run took them up to 10th. They were never in the hunt for a playoff place.

His time at MK Dons was even worse. The season before he arrived, they got promoted. He then took them to 19th and 13th before he was replaced and they went up to 3rd . Everywhere he's been, he's done worse than the other managers before and after him. That is poor/mediocre at best.

As for the cups, none of his teams ever got past the 3rd round. His greatest achievement was a 0-0 draw with Eastleigh in the 1st round before scraping through in a penalty shootout.

A club of our size should be able to attract a much better manager than him.

Sounds like he will go down a storm at the pre-season fans forum with his salesperson speak.

I get accused on here of being negative, but this is basically another “wacky” appointment by Ankersen, who is treating this club as if he is in a casino.

Sugar coating this with “give him a chance” guff is the sort of heads in sand nonsense we have seen rather a lot of from some on here of late.

"He's incapable of speaking in normal English"

He's the natural candidate to follow Jones and Selles.

Swansea's previous finishes of 6th and 4th were achieved under a manager who I was criticised on here 12-18 months ago for saying we should have been in for when Hassenhutl was losing the plot.

And who has just kept his team up in the Prem.

In case the question is asked who we should instead have got, I would have been happy with Mowbray or Rodgers. Both have got teams promoted from the Championship without spending big sums and with teams who play good football without passing the ball just for the sake of it.

Just not good enough
Sure he will do but will he turn us into a Burnley like Kompany did and run away with the division, no
We need areal good inspirational manager to keep players attract players play the right type of game and get us straight back up
That is NOT Russell

Apparently Russell Martin is an advocate of possession football.
I am not.
Check the stats, it's not the teams that have most possession that win matches (exception being Man City).
It's the teams that have pace to break quickly & cause problems for teams that want play out from the back.
Playing out from the back & possession in your own half is suicidal, look at how many goals have been conceded recently because they insist on playing out from the back (note - Lavia v Liverpool is just one example).
If RM insists on us playing the possession game, we going to be in trouble.
But let's wait & see, he's not even been confirmed as our new manager yet.

Aye.

Pace is the key thing.

Luton have it right across their team; they don’t necessarily have that much possession of the ball, but when they get it, they have an end product.

I’m not convinced at all that they will go straight back down. They will do well at home, and have the pace to hit teams on the break away from home.

Whereas Saints are bereft of pace across the team; I am assuming that Tella won’t be coming back to us as he seems to have no intention of returning.

Tbf though, that is from like 2 years ago now and is back from his days at MK Dons and not Swansea, as if you look at some of the more recent posts on there, yeah many aren’t exactly filling me with confidence but a fair few are saying how many Swansea fans aren’t happy he’s leaving. And it is Swansea that he’s been managing for the last few years, not MK Dons
