Could be stuck on 7 points for a while......... 22:49 - Sep 20 with 627 viewsA1079

We really needed that win tonight because you would have to say, it looks highly unlikely we will get any points against Spurs or Chelsea. Following that it is Wolves and whilst they have had a poor start you just know they will break it against us. After that I believe it is Leicester and Man City!

Many of our fans, me included many times, have lauded the Ralph Hassenhuttl effect, but tonight and against the first half at Sheff Utd he has got his team and tactics wrong. At Sheff he got away with it, tonight, he did not. We cannot even complain of decisions going against us, because so far VAR has worked in our favour.

What I am really not getting is this:-

- why the repeatedly poor first half of games?
- why, no matter who we put up front, are we so impotent?

We have all covered our issues in defence for several windows now and tonight it was shocking at times. It seems that even RH hasn't got a clue what combination to put there, but I feel, for as unreliable as they all are, he needs to settle on some sort of combination and not keep swapping it around - though he seems settled on Vestergaard and that bewilders me (I appreciate, I am in danger of contradicting myself here). But, for the life of me and I suspect everyone on here, why oh why have we allowed this defensive issue and lack of investment to continue window after window. Whatever small steps we have made are in danger of being erased by this negligence.

As poor as we are at the back, we are equally as poor up front. Harry Wilson not a PL player before this season has scored 3 goals in 5 games. Timo Pukki for Norwich, new to the PL has scored in virtually every game so far, Mason Mountford for Chelsea and James Daniel for Man U, new to the PL have shown that they know where the net is, yet, no matter, who we put up front, experienced or new, seem to become totally goal-shy.

Nick goes on about Captains and leaders and he is right - tonight, in a number of positions, we did not have one, whereas in Bournemouth there was noticeably several. Bournemouth were second best in the second half and we were the better side then. The first half cost us because we were a shambles, the second half cost us, because we can't seem to find the net.

Our home record, whichever way you look at, under several managers now, is truly awful.

As much as I enjoyed last weeks game and result at Sheff, I did feel the result papered over the on-going issues and I also feel Ralph needs to be careful not to become arrogant and blinded by hype.

Great write up, fully agree. I'd add that we were also quite lucky against Brighton and if it hadn't been for them going down to ten men from 30 mins they could easily have won that game (they had bossed it up until that point).

To be honest I hadn't realised how badly out of shape we look when our mediocre (at best) defenders are asked to play out of position. The Bertrand thing really did hurt us tonight - playing a CB out of position at RB, a RB out of position at LB and having a LB on the bench AND ANOTHER RB in the stands makes absolutely no sense. Someone else on here mentioned about Ralph over-complicating things - I think that's pretty much the size of it.

I don't think the players we have are good enough to play several different styles as Ralph seems to want. One formation suits as as we inevitably revert to it in the second half of games (a back four with players playing in preferred positions), and maybe another of a back five (with the correct LB and RB in place). But that's it - chopping and changing simply doesn't work and I hope Ralph has learned that lesson tonight (bit strange that it hasn't been learned already).

I reckon Man City could do what Ralph wants us to do, but not our squad.

You’re right about all this, but defensive issues would be minimised by the manager picking a settled back line with round pegs in round holes.
Our midfield is suspect as Hojbjerg and Ward-Prowse can’t seem to have a consistent 90 minutes
Going forward we have the skill but final ball and shot accuracy is missing most of the time. Redmond hasn’t hit it yet this season so you have to hope Djenepo/Boufal keep turning it on or Redmond gets back to last season standards.
If the midfield and full backs/wing backs are settled and sharpen up this should result in goals for Adams who has been a bit unlucky so far.
We have a decent chance against Chelsea and Wolves.

Win on Tuesday and everything will be okay.

A win on Tuesday is essential TheMoog. Defeat is too painful to contemplate.

Nevertheless,we cannot gloss over our deficiencies in the league and especially at home. We needed to win tonight for the sake of our league position and with the games in the league coming up. RH tried to be too clever tonight and it backfired. We have too many players who struggle and error prone in their supposed natural position let alone experimenting with them out of it.

Still, nothing can change tonight now and we have to move on. Tuesday is now the focus and then worry about Spurs.

I think you could well be correct mate! - Could be stuck on 7 points for a while......... what disappoints me was how many times tonight was several saints players hit their shots against the legs of there defenders ......... and how many times do we have to see JWP hit the ball over the bar from promising crosses - time after time in many recent games you could include Redmond in that as well ( even Harry Wilson had the skill to kept his shot LOW and in the corner ) - WHAT DO they practice in training? and get paid vasts amounts of money every WEEK! to put the ball in the bloody onion bag.

Seems like JWP believes his Dead Ball Specialist Tag ... and refuses to score from a moving ball. Could have / should have had 6 tonight FFS!!

As always a great post
As you say the defence everyone knows about although it appears Ralph still thinks it will do okay to keep changing it
I like the guy but he is fast becoming the tinker man
We don’t seem to ever play a settled team one week to the next, all this adapting and system changing doesn’t breed consistency and I think we need to play our best team week in week out and make other teams adapt to us
I like Adams a lot and feel he has goals in him and boufal (who was great tonight) and Redmond up with him shows promise
I am not sure Armstrong is very good. Lightweight and gives the ball away easily
It’s gonna be a long season and also panic buying defenders in January, who saw that coming...!?!?!

Bednarek is ok, the other CBs at the club are simply not good enough.
Surely Vokins, Danso, Bednarek, Cedric would of been the start if Bertrand is in the doghouse?

It needed an experienced CB brought in during the summer, but we all know that.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.
